You must reach Bode's quarters while using the officer's disguise. Examine the tent from the corner of the room.

Stay in the quarters and scan the painting on one of the walls showing Bode's family.
Essence #1
You can only get this secret during the next visit to Nova Garon, because whilst being disguised as an officer in the main storyline, the game will not allow you to open the door.
Reach the side door in the quarters, which is near Bode's quarters. When you open them, you will find an essence that grants you XP.
