Go to the Museum
Brewster is one of the very important characters in the 2.0 Update. Thanks to him, your Museum will be able to open a cafe. Finding him is not difficult, but also not immediate.
Visit Blathers in the Museum - above his head you will see a bubble with three dots. Even though it's daytime, Blathers won't sleep. He came up with the idea to open a cafe inside the Museum. To do that, though, he needs Brewster's help - Brewster is the barista, and he's missing. You have to find him.
Find Kapp'n
During this conversation, you will unlock Kapp'n, a new character stationed at the Pier in the boat. Kapp'n organizes trips to neighboring islands - they cost 1,000 Bells and work the same as airport departures, the only difference being the limit of 1 trip per day. Go on a journey with Kapp'n. You should find Brewster on the first island you visit.
Start a conversation with him and tell him why you came. Brewster will give you a Gyroid fragment and tell you what to do with it (Bury and water!), and then say goodbye, making it clear that you will see each other soon. All done.
