Regardless of the chosen character class, in Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire you can create new items and enchant weapons. Both actions require materials. You can buy them at vendors, pick-up from the defeated opponents, or simply find them during exploration. Most of the items will prove to be useful - plants, gems, food, or iron (remember that your party has unlimited space in their backpacks, so pick up every item you find). Gold will also be useful - crafting and enchanting require money. Crafting and enchanting are available at any location, provided you are outside of combat.
The crafting menu is activated through clicking on the mortar icon found in the bottom left corner of the screen. If you have enough supplies and gold to create an item, the game will inform you about that, placing a number of the available recipes next to the crafting icon.
Clicking on the icon will activate the window shown in the screenshot above. Here, you can choose one of the categories: drugs, explosives, poisons and antidotes, food, potions, and magic scrolls. If you choose an item, you'll see its statistics, description, required materials (including gold) that are required for its creation.
Creating new items doesn't require developing your skills - the only exception are scrolls, which require some Arcana skills on your part.
Items useful at the beginning of the game
The crafting list contains loads of items - many of them will require expensive ingredients, but others can be crafted right in the first hours of the game. The table below contains a few useful potions and bombs, the ingredients to which you will obtain if you only loot carefully the locations on the first island, and the nearby islets (you can also buy them from Neketaka's merchants).
Potion of minor healing
Ta Ondra Tara
Potion of elemental defense
You can enchant all unique weapons, armors, and shields (items that have a golden frame). Where to find unique weaponry? It is often found at vendors (most of the time, the price of those items is high), or can be looted from more difficult opponents, or found in well-hidden or locked chests. Some of your companions have unique armor - e.g. Aloth, Eder or Pallegina.
How to enchant weapons? If you manage to acquire the right amount of materials and gold for an enchant, the item will receive a plus icon next to it. You can also press the right mouse button on the item and choose "enchanting".
What are the advantages of enchanting? This option enables you to place additional effects on the item, which will increase its statistics. The available bonuses differ following the type of weaponry - different effects can be placed on two-handed swords, and other on light armors. The range of effects is even more wider - the available bonuses begin with simple damage upgrade and end on additional spells for your character.
