On this page of the guide to The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, you will find a short description about the fight with Master Stalfos.

Master Stalfos is a Mini-Boss appearing in Catfish's Maw. Use a spin attack when he swings his sword at you to knock him down and then quickly put a bomb near his bones. He flees from the chamber after sustaining a certain amount of damage. You must fight with him four times in different rooms. Every room is numbered with a block in the corners of the room. Upon his final defeat, he drops the Hookshot.
