On this page of the guide to The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, you will find a short description about the fight with Hardhit Beetle.

Hardhit Beetle is the Main Boss of Color Dungeon, an optional level in the game. Hit him with your sword until he changes his color to red. He is capable to heal himself, so you must defeat him quickly, or else he will change back to blue. Hardhit Beetle calls skeletons for help and releases sparks, against which you can defend yourself with a shield. Defeating him will give you access to the Great Fairy that will offer you the Blue or Red Clothes.
