During the creation of the protagonist in Baldurs Gate 3, one of character origin options is Dark Urge. On this page we explain this choice in detail - how to play as a hero with an inner urge to cause hurt and mayhem, how choosing Dark Urge affects the gameplay, and whether you need to comply with the urges.

Choosing Dark Urge as Origin

1 - Baldurs Gate 3: Who is Dark Urge in BG3? - Character & party development - Baldurs Gate 3 Guide, Walkthrough
  1. Dark Urge is one of the Origins you can choose for your hero in character creation wizard (instead of creating a completely custom character).
  2. In contrast to the other characters (e.g. Laezel, Astarion, Gale) Dark Urge is not a hero with a predefined gender, appearance or statistics. The game by default suggests a dragonborn race, but you can set another, as well as modify face, body build, class, traits, proficiencies, and other parameters.

2 - Baldurs Gate 3: Who is Dark Urge in BG3? - Character & party development - Baldurs Gate 3 Guide, Walkthrough
  1. The unique premise of the character is that they are consumed with a lust for murder and struggles with this desire throughout the entire game.
  2. The urge speaks at chosen moments in the narrator's voice (either a man or a woman) encouraging to surrender to the instinct and perform actions that can lead to harm or murder of other beings. Dark Urge dialogue options or behaviors are marked with italics.
  3. The player can fight with this subconscious desire to harm others, or follow it willingly, which can have a serious effect on the course of some of the conversations and scenes. This can also affect relationships with party members. For example, playing a psychopath might appeal to the elf Astarion.

  1. Playing as Dark Urge can unlock new cutscenes and new interactive scenes related to the hero's unique origin. Many of these situations are sudden impulses, in which you have to unexpectedly fight to the urge to kill.
  2. Behaving in accordance with "expectations" of Dark Urge in certain scenes can be rewarded with Inspiration points. You can then spend gathered points to repeat unsuccessful Ability/Skill Checks.
  3. Dark Urge is an interesting motivation for another playthrough (e.g. after completing the first playthrough with a positive, good-natured character) or a good choice for a thoroughly evil hero.

4 - Baldurs Gate 3: Who is Dark Urge in BG3? - Character & party development - Baldurs Gate 3 Guide, Walkthrough
  1. One of the first opportunities where Dark Urge comes into play is the situation with Myrnath and talking brain Us encountered in the Prologue.
  2. Dark Urge wants to submit Us to a lobotomy completed through a Dexterity Check. Nevertheless, the end result is unchanged, as the talking brain can join the team for the duration of the Prologue all the same.

  1. Another major scene is meeting Gale in Act 1. As a reminder, the warlock will attempt to go through a portal in Roadside Cliffs and will reach out his hand.
  2. You can give in to the urge and sever Gale's hand. This will have catastrophic consequences, as it will eliminate him as a potential candidate for the team.

  1. In Druid's Grove, you can meet a squirrel. The interaction scene with it may have an unpleasant end, as the hero decides to kick it with tremendous force. The animal will collide with the tree and die in a brutal way.
  2. After performing the action, you can choose one of several dialogue options to justify your action (or not) to the rest of the team.

  1. Additionally, Dark Urge can manifest during the first meeting with Kagha in Emerald Grove. The fate of Arabella, a girl accused of theft, is being decided at this location.
  2. Following the persuasion of the urge, you can make a small gesture and encourage the little girl to escape. This will lead to Arabella being bitten by a snake and dying in agony. Other characters won't notice that it was the hero who persuaded Arabella to behave in such a way.
