Where can I find the first merchants?
The first location where you can find several merchants is the Druid Grove. It is located north-west of the beach where you start the first act of the campaign.
Upon reaching the Grove for the first time, you have to deal with a group of goblins standing in front of the main entrance to this location. Some of the inhabitants of the Grove will help you in the fight. After winning the battle, walk to the large gate – it will open automatically.
Arron sells potions, magic scrolls, various types of arrows, sets for opening locks and disarming traps, torches, melee weapons, and clothes. He also has a lot of gold, so you can get rid of many unnecessary items.
Dammon sells different types of arrows, melee and ranged weapons, shields, and various pieces of armor. This trader also has a lot of gold.
Auntie Ethel sells various potions and rare alchemical ingredients. This character is also associated with one of the quests in which you try to get rid of the parasite from the main character's body. You can meet her later in the game at her home outside the Grove.
When you first encounter Mattie, he will ask you to play a game using a ring that supposedly brings good luck – this is optional. He sells sets for opening locks and unique rings. This merchant has the least gold of all the traders in the Grove.
Trade and barter - how are they different?
When you open the trade window, you will always see a switch at the top of the screen - we marked it in the picture. It allows you to switch between Trade and Barter.
If a trade option is chosen, all transactions will require the use of gold. You can spend gold on items offered by the merchant or sell your own goods for gold.
Additional note - The value of items you buy and sell does not correspond to their actual values displayed in their descriptions. You have to be aware that you will pay the merchant more for the goods you buy from them, and that the value of the items you sell will be reduced.
If you choose to barter, two vertical fields will appear. You can place the items you want to get rid of and items from the merchant's inventory that you want to exchange (including gold if you are only interested in it).
Additional note - You can easily match the value of both offers by clicking on the scale button above the Barter. It can quickly select the right amount of gold from your inventory or the merchant's.
Stealing from merchants
Baldur's Gate 3 has the option to steal from merchants, but this is risky. If you are caught on stealing, you may lose the option to trade with that NPC, or even get attacked by them. We recommend saving the game before you try to steal from someone.
As with robbing regular NPCs, choose a hero with Sleight of Hand skill. You should also remember to activate the stealth mode. You can try to steal items lying in plain sight/inside chests, or use the pickpocketing option on the trader. As a reminder, any attempt to take an item out of an NPC's pocket is a skillcheck - the dice must roll a value higher or equal to that required for the attempt to be successful.
