Is there an inventory capacity limit?

1 - Baldurs Gate 3: Is there capacity limit? - Character & party development - Baldurs Gate 3 Guide, Walkthrough
  1. In BG3, your party members have a limited inventory capacity. There are 2 types of limitations. The first is the limit of available equipment slots. If it gets full, that character won't be able to pick up more items.
  2. The maximum carrying capacity of a character is more important. Information about the carrying capacity limit for a given character can be seen in their inventory window. You will find out how much the current items weigh, as well as what the maximum carrying capacity is.
  3. The load limit is influenced by 2 factors. The first is Strength ability - the higher this stat, the higher the limit. The second factor is the hero's stature. Larger heroes receive a bonus when calculating the lifting limit, while smaller ones (e.g. Halfling, Gnome) receive penalties, and their carry limit will be lower even if they have high Strength.

  1. You can check how much an item weighs in the window when you want to pick it up or by hovering over them in the inventory.
  2. Weapons and armors are the heaviest. This type of equipment can definitely fill up the carry limit the fastest.
  3. Camping supplies can also be rather heavy. A single set of rations or food may not weigh much, but multiple will add up quickly.

Penalties for exceeding the inventory limit

  1. The most important penalty for exceeding the weight limit is that that character will move slower. The penalty can be small or significant. During a battle, a slowed character has a reduced range of movement.
  2. Additional penalties may be lower chances of passing skill checks and reduced effectiveness of defensive and offensive rolls. All this makes a given character less useful and potentially exposes them more to enemy attacks.

Note - The game does not inform directly that a character is overloaded. Try to regularly check the weight of items in their inventories.

There are 3 ways to deal with exceeding the load limit:

  1. Transfer items to the inventory of another party member - This is especially useful if you have character who can carry more items. You can drag the item onto the ally's portrait or right-click and select them on the list.
  2. Sending unneeded items to camp - Fortunately, you don't need to return to camp to do it. You can send any item to camp whenever you'd like. Select one or several (SHIFT key), right click and choose Send to Camp. They'll be sent to the Traveller's Chest at your camp.
  3. Sell items - This option will get you some gold, but be careful not to accidentally sell unique items, such as a rare piece of armor or a weapon.
