Liberating various places (and as a result - provinces) is one of the key gameplay mechanics in the game. Aside from changing the colors of the borders from red to blue, it allows you to:

  • Replenish ammo - almost all places you liberate have at least one cabinet filled with ammunition (some places, especially military bases have several of those), where you can replenish your supply of ammo and grenades.
  • Boxes containing flares - some places (details can be found below) allow you to replenish your supply of flares, which are used to call in the rebel drop, or to fast travel.
  • Finding save haven - liberated bases are literally flooded with rebels armed with various weapons and vehicles, who will help you when you are chased by dozens of enemies (which often happens, especially with higher heat levels).
  • Move around the map easily - the game gives the option to fast travel to a liberated spot, but it will normally cost you a flare to do so (which can be replenished at liberated places). If you liberate a whole province, you will be able to travel to any place inside that province for free.

There is a total of 130 places in the game that can be liberated, divided into 3 groups: cities, outposts and military bases.

Cities

Cities are the easiest to liberate, but they will give you the least valuable reward - a garage, in which you will be able to "save" a car (by standing inside of a blue circle - this way it will be added to your collection and you will be able to request it via a rebel drop). While liberating cities, you will have to:

  • Destroy a couple of objects - billboards, propaganda towers and cars, Di Ravello's statues, projectors, as well as transformers.
  • Liberate a police station. Here you will be given from 2 to 3 different tasks, such as demolishing the base enough (destroying objects, eliminating enemies), which is represented by a special bar on top of the screen, which fills up as you wreak havoc. Additionally, you will have to open from 1 to 4 gates (by pressing a special, marked button), which will allow the rebels to storm the police station, or to free the prisoners, by hacking from 1 to 3 terminals. Afterwards, the police station will be liberated and your heat will be cleared.
  • Disabling the communication system. On top of the roofs of some of the buildings in certain towns you will be able to find special panels, which can be activated (you can't have any heat to do so). When you do so, you will be given a little over a minute to activate all the remaining panels, scattered around the city. If you are successful, the task will be completed, but if you run out of time, the enemies will start chasing you (you will be given 3rd level of heat).

When all the tasks are completed, you will have to raise the flag (a special marked will appear on the screen), after which the city will finally be liberated.

The city is the only type of place that can be liberated almost entirely without detection (almost, as liberating a police station requires you to cause destruction). In order to do so, you have to use your explosive charges, planting them when you are outside of the view of the authorities (if an enemy sees you, a yellow icon will appear on the screen). Detonating an explosive when you are not in sight will not get you any heat. Thanks to that, you will be able to clear entire cities without the enemy noticing anything.

For liberating a city you will receive:

  • Access to a garage
  • A couple of challenges, provided that those are within the city borders
  • Ammo cabinet (at the police station)

Military Bases

Liberating military bases focuses mainly on fierce exchanges of fire with enemy forces (whose numbers often go into hundreds), but it yields the best and most profitable rewards - each military base you liberate will give you access to a new vehicle or weapon, which directly increases the overall effectiveness of the main character in combat.

To liberate a military base, you will have to destroy from several to dozens of various constructions, often scattered around huge areas. Aside from that, you may have to:

  • Kill the commander. When you've wreaked enough havoc, a military base commander may appear in the area (you will be informed about that through the radio, as well as by an appropriate icon appearing on the screen). Often the commander will be using a powerful vehicle (like a tank, or a helicopter), and further into the game you will probably have to face vehicles coated with the bavarium shield.
  • Destroy the excavator. A construction appearing only on the Insula Striate island. To destroy it, you will have to blow from 6 to 8 generators located on the sides of the huge construction, and then destroy the drill mechanism itself by blowing up the arm on which the blade is installed.

The liberation will definitely be easier when you get rid of the enemy anti-aircraft batteries - thanks to that, the rebels will be able to use helicopters to support you from the air (if there will be a possibility to call in the air support, you will be informed about the fact via the radio).

For liberating a military camp you will be given:

  • A new vehicle or a weapon (details can be found in the "Equipment" section).
  • From 1 to even 6 ammo cabinets.
  • Easy access to countless military vehicles - armored vehicles, tanks, helicopters and fighter jets.

Outposts

Outposts are the most numerous group of places you can liberate, and their liberation is by far the easiest - you just have to blow up from a few to little over a dozen objects, without the need to complete any additional tasks. Despite the fact that you won't be given a valuable reward, like with the military bases, it's worth to liberate outposts. There are two reasons behind that - it's extremely easy to do and it gives some valuable profits as well. Those are:

  • Access to the ammo cabinet.
  • Access to numerous military vehicles (except fighter jets).
  • Access to a box of flares, in which you can replenish your supply of flares used to call in the rebel drop, or to fast travel. It's the only place (aside from random events and rebel hideouts) where you can find those boxes.

Events

Events aren't marked in the game in any visible way, such as in the map or in the journal. Those appear in random places, during your journey through the world - if you are close to an event, an appropriate icon will appear on the screen. Those are short, easy to complete tasks, such as:

  • Saving a rebel - you have to steal the car carrying the rebel, lose the heat and then simply drop the rebel out of the car.
  • Eliminating informants. First you have to steal the marked vehicle and drive it to the place indicated by the marker. After you've taken the informant into the car, you have to kill him / her in such a way, that it will look like an accident (by throwing the informant off a cliff).
  • Tow the rebel vehicle to the nearest gas station. You just have to drive your car close to the car of the rebel, attach your ropes between the cars and then drive it to the nearest gas station, which should be marked on your screen.

For completing those random events, you will be given one of the two rewards - a box containing a supply of flares, or the possibility to unlock the nearest monastery (it will happen automatically when you are near it). It won't take longer than several seconds to complete it, so it's recommended you do them each time they are available.

Monasteries

There are monasteries scattered around various provinces (which are marked with a question mark, like a collectible, when you liberate a province), which become active after completing an event while being in a close vicinity. Monasteries can be used as points for fast travel, or, which is more important, as a shelter. The latter allows you to advance the in-game time a few hours, during which the enemy will stop chasing you and you will lose any heat you had prior. It's extremely useful, especially when you are dealing with heat level 4 or 5, which is a nightmare to lose normally, as you are being chased by enemy helicopters.
