You can EVE Online alone, but joining Corporations run by players gives you much more opportunities and speeds up development. The world of the New Eden has numerous such organizations, but not all of them are worth joining - you should know how to find the right one.
Starting NPC Corporations
After creating a new character in EVE Online and reaching New Eden, each player joins the starting NPC Corporation, which has a 10% tax on mission rewards. You can join another Corporation at any time. Once you decide to leave it, you'll be back at the starting Corporation.
How to find the right Corporation?

Do not accept invitations that will bombard your in-game mailbox. Such organizations usually have nothing interesting to offer. Instead, take some time to find a Corporation that will fit your requirements both organization- and culture-wise.
