Experience points are necessary to advance your character to a higher level. Character promotion unlocks access to further skills in the development trees. The faster you gain experience points, the faster you will develop your character. In Bard's Tale IV experience points can be gained in two ways.

Every defeated enemy will grant you additional XP.

The first one is to complete quests. Completion of each quest rewards you with a sufficient number of experience points. Amount of XP depends on the length and complexity of the task. XP amount is not always satisfactory and you don't have any meaningful impact on it, so it's worth trying with the next option.

The second way is to fight a lot. Each defeated opponent guarantees you a certain amount of experience points. This amount depends on the difficulty of the fight and opponent type. During combat you can gain additional experience points. Just don't avoid any confrontation with your opponents. Fight against any opponent that is not marked with red glow.

If you want to maximize the amount of experience points, use opponents that may summon additional reinforcements, then focus on summoned units. If you defeat them all, the main opponent will summon more of them. Killing each of summoned enemy gives you experience points, so you can accumulate a considerable amount of points while you repeat this procedure.
