Find chess pieces - king and queen | Sewers in Resident Evil 2 Resident Evil 2 Guide and Walkthrough

When you reach the sewers in Resident Evil 2, your first objective is to find a hideout. There, you will find a save point and a metal chest. Once you do that, you can start looking for switches shaped like chess pieces - they are part of a mandatory puzzle.

T-shaped tool and safe

Leave the hideout and use the lever to lower the bridge. Cross it. Take a sharp turn to the left and reach the end of the path going along tracks. There, you will find a T-shaped tool.

1. Tip 1: a safe is at the opposite end of this path - the password is 2-12-8. Inside, you will find an upgrade for SLS 60 revolver (Claire) or gun stock for W-870 shotgun (Leon).
2. Tip 2: leave a lot of empty slots in your inventory before you exit the hideout. On your way, you will come across a weapon that takes 2 slots, and 2 switches (have at least 4 empty slots).

The path to the puzzle

Go back to the bridge, go through the EXIT door and down the stairs. Defeat a zombie and then turn left into the dark corridor (don't go into the water yet).

A few meters away you will find a locked door. Open it with the recently found tool. Cross the bridge and take the key lying above the white table. After that, you have to jump down into the water.

The monster in the sewers.

Reach the ladder. You will encounter monsters living in the sewers - Leon can defeat them with a shotgun or a flamethrower; Claire can use her grenade launcher. If you don't have these weapons, simply shoot them in the eye (or try to go around them). These monsters can poison you - cure yourself by using a mix of blue herbs.

The chess pieces puzzle and a new weapon

Time for a simple puzzle:

1. Remove the queen chess piece from the electric switch and insert it into the second empty slot. The previous passage will close - don't worry about that.
2. Reach the top of the stairs and take the king chess piece. Jump down through the hole in the barrier.
3. Go through the door opened with the queen chess piece and place the king chess piece near the steel door at the end. This room contains another weapon - Leon gets a flamethrower; Claire gets Spark Shot (a special electric weapon).
4. Go back and remove the queen chess piece. Go back through the gate and take out the king chess piece.
5. Place the queen chess piece in the same slot from which you took it first (near the stairs leading to this room).
6. Insert the king chess piece into the empty slot near the stairs.
7. Go through the open door and take out the queen chess piece. Go back to the stairs and take out the king chess piece. Take both chess pieces back into the hideout and store in the chest.
