This guide page for NieR Automata explains how to advance weapons to the maximum fourth level (Level 4). You will find instructions on where to find the secret blacksmith and information about the requirements for reaching level 4.

Weapons' levels 1-3

As you progress through the game, you can receive and find new weapons. Each of them is at the first level (Lv. 1). Level up your favorite weapons to increase their statistics (e.g. more damage) and grant them new features (e.g. improve attack speed).

Upgrading weapons can only be done by a trader. The first trader is Weapons Trader staying in the Resistance Camp (options for interacting with him will become available after completing several initial quests in that location).

After talking to the trader, select the Upgrades option. You will see a list of the weapons you currently possess along with the requirements for upgrading them. You must:

  1. spend a certain amount of gold,
  2. use specific crafting materials- their list is displayed on the right side and you can get them, e.g. as loot or as rewards for completing quests.

By default, you can develop weapons to the third level. After reaching Lv. 3, a dash will appear to indicate that further upgrades are not available at this merchant. You can get a hint about looking for a unique blacksmith who could further improve the weapon. Finding him will be your next task.

Level 4 - how to get?

Upgrading any weapon to the fourth level will be rewarded with Tools of the Trade bronze trophy.
