Last update: 06 September 2021

This page of our guide to Humankind describes the basic resources: food, industry, money and science, or in short - FIMS. You'll also learn about collecting and processing these resources.

FIMS are the resources used by cities and are an essential component of their development. Without them, your empire cannot prosper. There are several way of processing these resources and all methods work only in cities. There are several other resources in the game, such as: Faith, Influence, Stability, as well as luxury and strategic resources. However, these values are unique and have an indirect impact on cities.

FIMS resources are divided into 4 types. Each is essential for different tasks and offers different benefits:

  1. Food - it's an essential resource for the development of the city. Without food, the new inhabitants of the city will not appear. The population is a very important element of the city, necessary for the production of the army and increase the revenues of the FIMS. Each unit of the population also needs food, so with the development of the city you need to increase the number of farms in the area.
  2. Industry - this resource is acquired from forests, mountains and rocky areas. This is a necessary factor for the production of Districts, Infrastructure projects, units, and special projects. Unused production passes to the next round. It is worth taking care of the high production in the city, because it will accelerate the expansion of the city with new districts.
  3. Money - an important aspect of the game from era 2-3, when you have to reimburse military units. For money, you can also trade with other nations and pay in the city to speed up the construction of various facilities or branches. Some random events also need you to spend money to avoid bad effects. If you continue to lose money, then in each round the stability of all your cities will decrease! Money is the only currency in the game that can be exchanged between nations through trade and treaties or as a result of war.
  4. Science - earning science points serves only one purpose, which is to acquire technology. Progress is necessary to unlock new units, districts and special passive features of the Empire, which have a global impact, for example, to increase the limit of cities or additional points of Fame.

Processing FIMS resources

Basic resources are obtained in 3 ways: through specialists, construction of districts and processing of surrounding resources. Some technologies can also make larger revenues e.g. money per capita or the main square and administrative center. However, the main way is to build districts and collect resources from their surroundings. Specialists are the city inhabitants who are assigned to the role of e.g. researchers or farmers. In this way, they collect only one type of resources.

In this region, only geysers can provide science points. The science district is the only one that can process this kind of revenue. Science points in the early eras are difficult to obtain, so this is an extremely useful direction of development. - Humankind: Basic resources (FIMS) - Cities - Humankind Guide

Districts can bring income from their own field. Their value is modified for the surrounding districts. The more similar districts are next to each other, the more revenue they provide. Remember that each district can process only one type of resources! Some emblematic districts, ports or villages can collect more than one resource. The main square, the outposts, and the administrative center always process food and industry. Cultural wonders can be built on any territory field and collect all FIMS resources around your location! It is worth taking advantage of this and build such a wonder in a remote field that is rich in basic resources.

This Cultural Wonder will collect all the resources from the surrounding river fields. Only the field on the left (yellow border) will not be processed because it is located in a territory belonging to another city. - Humankind: Basic resources (FIMS) - Cities - Humankind Guide

Processing works in a simple way: once you select a district, your revenue will increase by the amount of bonuses that affect the districts and the revenue that matches the district type. Resources will be collected from all fields adjacent to the new building. If the fields have more than one type of resources, only the resource that is processed by the district is collected.

How to collect several resources from one field? For example: river field with forest, usually offer food and industry points. Therefore, you must build agricultural and industrial districts next to such a field in order to collect all the income from such a field. If you build another districts on such a field, then you lose some of the revenue (erecting agricultural districts will reset processing industry points). Profitable fields as rivers, geysers, caves, etc. are worth for building districts only at a later stage of the game.

Some emblematic districts can be recognized as several types of districts and can collect more resources! Place them strategically to maximize your income. For example, the the Nubians pyramids can collect industry points and money. This bonus processes the surrounding resources and accumulates with neighboring districts. Thus, one district collects two different resources.
