S points areas with special kinds of treasures.

Orange exclamation marks warn about areas where it can get more difficult because of the presence of monsters or because of the existence of traps. Red exclamation marks warn about even more hazardous areas where you may end up getting killed easily unless you're prepared to go into battle.
