The Mongols are an aggressive, and highly technologically advanced civilization. What distinguishes the Mongols from other civilizations is their nomadic nature, which allows them to pack their buildings and relocate easily.

The Mongols are extremely versatile and can easily outperform the military of any other civilization. However, the lack of stone walls will require more attention, as your settlements will be constantly exposed to enemy attacks.

Despite their many bonuses, the Mongols are considered a difficult civilization for the novice player to master.

Bonuses

  1. Recover 50 food, wood and gold by setting enemy buildings on fire;
  2. All buildings can be packed up and moved to another location;
  3. Maximum population at the start of the game;
  4. Cavalry available already in the 1st era;
  5. Knights available from the 2nd era onwards;
  6. Using stone provides doubled unit production or advanced technology research;
  7. Transport ships have 50% more health and move 15% faster;
  8. 10% bonus to resources from trade routes with more Traders.

Unique units

  1. Khan - a unique unit of horseback archers. His skills support and strengthen the army. A player can only own 1 such unit at a time;
  2. Mangudai - an outstanding horse archer, capable of shooting accurately even at full gallop.

Landmarks

2nd era:

  1. Deer Stones - a military building that provides a Yam speed aura to nearby Traders and a bonus to speed for cavalry;
  2. The Silver Tree - an economy building with Market features. Merchant production is costs 50% less and is 50% faster.

3rd era:

  1. Steppe Redoubt - An economy building with warehouse features. Gold placed in this building is increased by 50%;

  1. Kurultai - military building. When a Khan is nearby, all units affected by the building are healed and receive a 20% bonus to dealt damage for 30 seconds.

4th era:

  1. Khaganate Palace - a military building that produces an army of Riders and Mangudai or Lancers every 90 seconds;
  2. The White Stupa - an economic building with Ovoo features. It produces 240 pieces of stone per minute, with no quarry connection required.

Unique technologies

1st era:

  1. Superior Mobility (Ovoo) - tents are packed and unpacked 50% faster.

2nd era:

  1. Whistling Arrows (Ovoo) - increases the range of Khan's skills for 3 seconds;
  2. Piracy (Dock) - after sinking an enemy ship, the player receives 50 wood and gold;
  3. Raid Bounty (Ovoo) - looting buildings brings 100 food and gold.

3rd era:

  1. Yam Network (Outpost) - increases the speed of all nearby units. Building a Deer Stones Landmark will unlock this technology for free;
  2. Additional Torches (Ovoo) - increases the torch power by 3 points.
  3. Siha Bow Limbs (Archery Range) - Increases Mangudai and Khan's long-distance damage by 1.

4th era:

  1. Monastic Shrines (Monastery) - buildings near Monasteries get access to improved technology even without Ovoo;
  2. Stone Bounty (Ovoo) - looting buildings brings 75 stone;
  3. Stone Commerce (Market) - having 9 or more Traders causes them to deliver gold and stone.

Unique buildings

  1. Ger - a building that stores food, wood and gold;

  1. Ovoo - this building must be placed in a quarry, and over time it will collect stone on its own. Only one Ovoo can exist at a time; building a new Ovoo will destroy the previous one. Buildings under Ovoo's influence have access to double unit production or improved technology;
  2. Pasture - generates 1 sheep every 90 seconds. Animal production will stop if there are 30 sheep by the tent.

When playing this civilization, you should focus on stone sources, as Mongols can't collect this resource. In return, they have a unique building, the Ovoo, which will start gathering stone on its own when placed on a quarry.

Buildings within Ovoo's range will produce double the number of units and gain access to unique technologies. However, keep in mind that only 1 Ovoo can be built at a time. When a new tent is constructed, the previous Ovoo will automatically be destroyed.

Mongolian traders can get 10% more resources on trade routes that have more traders. Their transport ships are 15% faster and have 50% more health.

Thus, you should you should produce as many troops as possible from the very beginning and immediately start the raid on enemy village. When looting buildings, Mongols gain 50 gold, food and wood. Researching the appropriate technology will increase the amount of recovered materials.

The Mongols have 2 unique units: Khan, who shoots signal arrows that heavily strengthens nearby warriors, and Mangudai horse archers. These trained Riders can hit the target while at full gallop. Thanks to the Mangudai, the Mongolian civilization gains an extraordinary advantage during raids. Horse archers will be able to lure out smaller groups of close-combat fighters using the feigned retreat tactic.
