In Saints Row, both automatic and manual saves are available. On this page of the guide, you will learn how to save the game manually and when your progress is saved automatically.
Checkpoints and automatic saves
As you complete missions in the game, automatic saves and checkpoints will keep track of your progress. The game creates checkpoints during a mission's key points, e.g. after an important event or before an intense battle begins. A Checkpoint Reached notification will then appear in the upper right corner of the screen. If you mess up, you can restart the entire mission or return to the last checkpoint. We only recommend restarting missions if you encounter a major bug.
Two automatic save files will always be available - the main and the backup one, which can be useful if, for example, your main save file gets corrupted or if you encounter a game-breaking bug, making it impossible to complete the mission.
Manual saves
You can also save the game manually and since manual saves are separate from autosaves, they won't conflict on your drive. What's great is that your manual saves will never be automatically overwritten without your knowledge and you're always free load a save file, e.g. from before you started a particular mission.
You can make a manual save by pausing the game and selecting the corresponding menu item. You can either save your game to a different slot or overwrite previous save files.
