Steam Cores power numerous buildings in Frostpunk. They are necessary for constructing a Factory and numerous other, more advanced, buildings, e.g. Steam Coal Mine. Because of that you should always have one extra Steam Core as a backup. This item can't be produced in your city because none of the buildings in Frostpunk can create them. Because of that you should look for other ways of obtaining them.

The game informs you when a Steam Core can be found in a location.

The only way to get Steam Cores is to find them by sending scouting teams. Send one of them to a location on the world map. Sadly, you never know what you will get by exploring them. Because of that you simply have to visit each one of them and hope for finding a Steam Core.

How to find Steam Cores?

First, you need to build a Beacon. It gives you access to scouting teams that can leave your city and explore the lands covered in ice. Thanks to these people you can find survivors who can go to your city or they can come across huge resource deposits. Sometimes - albeit rarely - they can find a location that contains Steam Cores. Remember: use Steam Cores wisely because you will always have small numbers of them.
