Last update: 05 April 2022

On this page, you will learn how many character classes there are in Dread Hunger and what they are like.

At the time of writing this guide, in Dread Hunger you can distinguish as many as 8 different character classes, each of which starts the game with specific items and a unique passive ability.

Captain

The Captain is probably one of the better classes as he starts with one of the best weapons in the game (a Saber) and is better at maneuvering the ship - Dread Hunger: Characters - list, descriptions - Basics - Dread Hunger Guide

The Captain is probably one of the better classes as he starts with one of the best weapons in the game (a Saber) and is better at maneuvering the ship. Due to the special ability, the Captain should always steer the ship so that the crew can move forward as quickly as possible.

Starting equipment:

  1. Saber: item loses durability when used,
  2. Tea: Restores some warmth.

Chaplain

Chaplain is a good choice if you want to focus on exploration, as this character class has a higher chance of finding trinkets (keys, materials and even bone daggers). Its main starting item is a shovel, which additionally helps while searching the maps of Dread Hunger.

Starting equipment:

  1. Shovel (useful for digging up items),
  2. Skeleton Key (used to open armored chests or cells on the ship).

Hunter

The Hunter is a very interesting character who, as one of the few classes in Dread Hunger, starts the game with ranged weapons and traps - Dread Hunger: Characters - list, descriptions - Basics - Dread Hunger Guide

The Hunter is a very interesting character who, as one of the few classes in Dread Hunger, starts the game with ranged weapons and traps. The Hunter's passive ability is the ability to harvest raw meat faster. Due to the starting equipment, this character works well in the role of the Possessed, because the trap can be used to sabotage the crew's actions.

Starting equipment:

  1. Bow,
  2. 4 Arrows (arrows that hit the target can be picked up and reused),
  3. 2 Bear Traps.

Ship's Cook

The main advantage of a cook is the ability to prepare meals faster, so he can efficiently feed the entire crew, poison his companions or turn them into cannibals (if he prepares meals from human meat). This character starts the game with a solid weapon (Cleaver), as well as a Meat Stew, so you don't have to worry so much about your character starving quickly.

Starting equipment:

  1. Cleaver,
  2. Meat Stew (restores some warmth and feeds the character).

Doctor

The Doctor is another great class because he can extend the life of dying allies and the healing items used by the Doctor are more effective (both when used on himself and on crew members). What's more, the Doctor starts the game with a solid weapon, so he can get food efficiently right away.

Starting equipment:

  1. Cleaver,
  2. Laudanum (healing item and antidote ingredient),
  3. Syringe.

Engineer

As the name suggests, the Engineer can craft items faster at the workbench - Dread Hunger: Characters - list, descriptions - Basics - Dread Hunger Guide

As the name suggests, the Engineer can craft items faster at the workbench. Similarly to the Cook, it is not a very desirable starting skill, which is why Engineer is placed at the bottom of the characters hierarchy. However, this character has a very useful starting item, a Barrel, which allows you to carry a large amount of coal, which normally cannot be stacked on the inventory bar.

Starting equipment:

  1. Wood Axe,
  2. Coal Barrel.

Royal Marine

The Royal Marine is the only character in Dread Hunger that starts the game with firearms. His passive ability allows you to reload the weapon faster. For this reason, the Royal Marine is one of the strongest characters to start with, but his advantage fades as the game progresses and the rest of the crew gains better equipment.

Starting equipment:

  1. Flintlock Pistol.

Navigator

The Navigator is a character that works well as a scout and explorer, mainly because he runs a bit faster than other characters - Dread Hunger: Characters - list, descriptions - Basics - Dread Hunger Guide

The Navigator is a character that works well as a scout and explorer, mainly because he runs a bit faster than other characters. The main attributes of the Navigator are a Spyglass, which can be used both as a weapon and for eavesdropping the crew's conversations, and a Lantern, which lights up the surroundings and restores a little warmth to all players who are nearby.

Starting equipment:

  1. Spyglass,
  2. Lantern.
