More than a half of the caves are, in fact, tunnels that join two distant lands

In Dragon's Dogma, there are no options to travel using a means of transport, or on a mount, which is quite a handicap when you have to cross long distances. What affects the speed and the duration of sprinting is the load that you are currently carrying. This is why, it is easier for players that play as, e.g. assassins and use light armors -often, this will let you be loaded to the slightest extent and still ensures you with the highest mobility. It is worth knowing that many caves are just tunnels between bigger locations and traveling along those tunnels is often safer than traveling over the surface (especially when the night is coming).

Using the Ferrystone, you can teleport into any location in the game world.

Still, there are two objects, thanks to which you can travel around the map faster. One of them is the Ferrystone, which is a special stone, pretty cheap (ab. 2000) and lightweight. Thanks to this stone, you can travel to Cassardis and Gran Soren from any location on the map. Its functionality can be extended by using the Portal Crystal (see below). It is always a good thing to have, at least, two, thanks to which you can travel safely, from a distant city, especially when the night is coming. Also, this will allow you to escape from a difficult fight that you have started, but you realized that your chances of winning are poor.

Portal Crystal

This one is a rare item. It looks like a big violet crystal. How does it work? All you need to do is place it in any location on the map and this will allow you to travel back into that location, using Ferrystone. What makes this useful, even if you have only one crystal, is that while far away from a city, you can travel there (e.g. to empty the inventory or replenish your supply of potions), and return into the same area. Crystals that you put on the map do not disappear and you can pick them up at any moment, to place them elsewhere.

NOTE! Even though cloning the Portal Crystal is an option, it is not a good idea to do this. A copy costs 300 000 gold pieces, and the copy loses the main property of the genuine one, i.e. the possibility of creating fast-travel points.
