On this page of our game guide to Control - The Foundation you can find the first part of our detailed description of The Nail story mission. The following walkthrough describes, among other things, how to solve the elevator puzzle in the Warehouse, how to complete a ritual in the Warehouse, how to solve the generators puzzle in the Collapsed Department section and how to complete a ritual in the Collapsed Department section.
The Nail quest is divided into two large parts and each of them requires the use of a different new power of Jesse. This description assumes that you have selected the Shape power. If you want to visit locations associated with the Fracture power, then check the separate page of our walkthrough - The Nail - Canyon Rim and Research Site Gamma.
- Basic information

- The following walkthrough assumes that Jesse has unlocked the Shape power in The Foundation story mission. If you have chosen the Fracture ability, then you will visit other locations that we have described on a separate page of our walkthrough.
- There are two large locations to visit - a Warehouse and a Collapsed Department You can reach them in any order. Just move to the part of our walkthrough which interests you most.
- If you have unlocked the Shape power as first, then after completing the rituals in the Warehouse and the Collapsed Department, the game will allow you to gain the second power. This will allow you to investigate the next two locations associated with the Fracture ability.
Reach the Warehouse Path
Begin the mission at the Crossroads. Reach the area shown in the pictures above, which is located on the western side of the Crossroads location.
Use the Shape power to extend one of the side ledges. Reach it by using the levitation, bounce off it, and enter a higher passage.
After a few moments, you will reach an area with a white abyss. Once again you have to use the Shape power here - this time to extend the right ledge.
Continue until you reach the Warehouse Path location. Position yourself as shown in the picture and perform a melee attack to generate a small shock wave in order to push the power core behind the fence into the generator slot.
Complete the ritual in the Warehouse
Continue the linear crossing to reach the Warehouse area. It is a vast location with a new checkpoint. However, the thorough examination of this area is purely optional. To continue your mission, find the entrance to the large monolith-tower on the ground floor.
Call the elevator. When you try to use it, you'll find out about a power supply problem. Once again, you have to stand in front of the grate and use a melee attack to push the power core into the generator slot.
You can take the elevator to Level 2 (Power Core Storage). Locate one of the working power cores among those that no longer accumulate any energy. Pull it to you character and move it to a new generator.
We also advise you to store another working power core in the elevator at that moment. You will appreciate this solution in a few moments.
By activating the new generator, the elevator can move to Level 3 (Tunnel Access). Get out of the elevator and locate a hole in the tower wall. Head towards a high rocky ledge visible in the distance (at the spot shown in the picture).
Start going through the caves. As you explore them you will find a checkpoint and using these points (there is one more of those) is advisable if you accidentally fall down, that is, to the bottom of this location.
When you leave the tunnel, expect to be attacked by a group of opponents. Remember to look for opportunities to activate power-related traps during the battle. They can make it easier for you to kill enemies.
After the battle is over, move on, and watch a new vision featuring Marshall. Reach the outer rocky ledge. In the spot shown in the picture you can use Shape to pull out side ledges. This will allow you to reach the yellow-marked 'stable' ledge.
Walk through the caves. You will come across another checkpoint. Watch out for more enemies who will attack Jesse soon after passing the checkpoint. Once again, it's worth to activate the traps.
The general tactics here are similar to these you have used before - after leaving the caves, locate a ledge that can be extended and start climbing. Your ultimate goal is to fly through the hole in the tower wall shown in the screenshot.
You can start destroying the red Hiss Nodes here, but unfortunately Jesse won't be able to reach them all. Call the elevator.
If you have left the power core in the elevator as we have previously suggested, then you can put it right away in a generator slot on that floor. If you missed this step, take the elevator to return to Level 2 (Power Core Storage) and take one of the active power cores. Unfortunately, you will have to repeat the climb, but you can use a fast travel option to move to the latest checkpoint.
Placing the core in the slot will allow you to activate the elevator and take it to Level 6 (Upper Warehouse). As you ride the elevator, you can optionally destroy a previously unavailable node.
On Level 6, it is a good idea to destroy the cracked wall shown in the picture. This will allow you to reach one of the hidden areas and unlock the local checkpoint.
Go to the monolith location and defeat a group of opponents (there are more places to activate traps here). Then touch the monolith.
You'll get into the Astral Plane. Use Shape (hold the telekinesis button) to rebuild a sphere-shaped object. You will receive some gratitude after doing this. Use the switch to return to The Warehouse location. As a reward, you will get 4 development points, weapon mod and crafting materials.
If you want to leave this place quickly, make a jump into the abyss. However, remember to land by using levitation before you collide with the ground.
Reach the Base
Move back to the Crossroads location. Now get to the area shown in the pictures above, which is located in the northeast part of the Crossroads.
Use Shape to pull out some ledges. Jump from ledge to ledge and reach the stable ledges in the distance. Ultimately, Jesse must make it to the entrance of the new cave.
While traveling through the caves, beware of flying enemies who, in addition to ranged attacks, can perform suicide attacks - react to this by activating the shield or by jumping back to the sides quickly. You'll also encounter new geysers. Once again avoid standing in spots where they explode.
You will have to engage in some battles after reaching the Fractured Cavern location. This is where you have to watch out for a strong opponent with a shield. Destroy it with telekinesis attacks and then fire at your opponent with a service weapon.
Keep moving forward and prepare yourself to take part in more battles. Once you reach the locked gate, break through the right room.
You will reach the Base Camp location with bridges hanging over the chasm. Start with destroying new Hiss Nodes. In the location shown in the picture you can extend a ledge. Reach it and then fly to the bridge located above.
Complete the ritual in the Collapsed Department
Turn north and choose a new passageway with rising walls. You'll reach a checkpoint. There is also a terminal nearby that allows you to summon a friendly ranger. It's worth using it to gain a temporary ally.
In the adjacent room you will have to take part in a battle with hostile rangers. Beware of enemy snipers during the fight - the game informs you when you get targeted and it is best to hide in a side-by-side office spaces. It is worth ignoring those enemies who are fighting with your companion and focus on the opponents that pose direct threat to Jesse.
After winning the battle, head to the exit on one of the upper levels.
Continue your journey (along the way you'll find an astral toilet associated with a trophy). In a new location with bridges, fly over a section of the chasm. You'll soon discover another checkpoint. Reach the switch and lift up the big gate.
In the next location, you will find out that you cannot lift another gate - you have to destroy a new power object. As a result, choose the right passageway (Transit Control).
You will get to a room where you can see the power object - a projector. Pressing the button won't do a thing, because you have to solve a puzzle, that is, you need to restore the power. Choose any of two passageways in order to reach the room with three generators (Transit Engine) - P-01, P-02 and P-03.
Turn to the right and find a wall with Power Cores inscription. Start using telekinesis to detach its metal shields.
Behind the metal shields you will find power cores that are usable. Pull them to Jesse one at a time. You'll need three cores in total.
Now take an interest in the metal plates above each of the generators - an example of such a plate above the P-02 generator is shown in the picture. You can also pull them by relying on telekinesis.
By ripping out the shields you will be able to throw the power core into the hole above the generator. The power core will automatically descend into the generator slot.
All 3 generators should be active. You can now return to the control room and press the button so that the power object can be moved.
Return to the bottom, specifically to the switch shown in the picture, which was previously unavailable. Pressing it will lift a new large gate.
You will be attacked by enemies in the new location. Leave the strongest opponent for the very end of the battle.
You must climb a bit and reach the top of two bridges connecting the previously visited control room and the generator room. This will allow you to head to the upper office space shown in the picture.
There is an optional location in the area - Transit Access, which is associated with the Jesse Faden Starring in "Swift Platform" side quest. Exploring it is entirely optional. A walkthrough of this optional mission can be found on a separate page of our game guide.
Continue to march through more rooms and corridors. You'll reach the new bridge and watch Marshall's new vision. In the next area you will find a monolith and you can interact with it immediately.
Repeat the actions which you have already performed on the monolith in the Warehouse, and rebuild the sphere by using telekinesis.
Unlocking the second power
If the Warehouse and Collapsed Department were your first locations, the game will now allow you to unlock the second power - The Fracture. We discussed this in more detail on another page of our guide - description of The Foundation mission.
Meeting with Former
Jesse will remain in the astral plane after unlocking the Fracture power. Head straight until you reach the place where you met with the Former.
After returning to the Collapsed Department you will receive rewards - 4 development points, weapon mod and crafting materials. The game will also add new mission objectives related to Fracture power. We have discussed them on another page of our guide - The Nail - Canyon Rim and Research Site Gamma.
