Diplomacy and trade in Age of Wonders Planetfall Age of Wonders Planetfall guide, tips

Last update: 16 August 2019

Diplomacy and trade in Age of Wonders: Planetfall aren't as complex as those in Total War: Three Kingdoms but they still give you a lot of interaction options with other factions. Also, thanks to these mechanics, many conflicts can be prevented before they become a real problem. In this section, you will find information about diplomacy and trade in Age of Wonders: Planetfall.

Diplomacy and trade - how to use them?

The diplomacy window.

You can open the diplomacy window using the button located in the upper left corner of the screen - the white icon resembling a building on a blue background. After that, the diplomacy window will open. On the left, you have a list of all the factions and NPC factions you have managed to make contact with on the map - in other words, the ones that were detected at least once.

After selecting one of the factions available in the list, you can begin diplomatic actions. The number of choices may not be as developed as in Total War: Three Kingdoms mentioned in the introduction. However, the game still has plenty to offer. In this menu, you can use influence points to approve (improve relationships), or anger (worse them) another faction leader. You can also open the negotiation window, where you will find several additional options - the ability to exchange resources, open borders and form an alliance or the ability to make another faction your vassal (or become one yourself).

All diplomacy is based on balancing "your proposal". If, for example, you want another faction to make peace with you, you will need to offer something in return - a specific amount of resources or territory data are just some of the many options. Also, the better the relationship between your faction and the other, the easier it will be to make a deal.

Diplomacy and neutral factions

Diplomacy looks different for neutral factions. Here, it is impossible to make any alliances or exchange resources. The relations with neutral factions are based on friendly relations. This means that first, you will need to gain their trust by completing a mission that will most likely be granted to you once you discover their units. After completing the mission for a neutral faction, you can trade with it - for influence points, you can buy their unique units or improvements, and each purchase will improve your relationship, unlocking further options.

Tips

Below you can find a few tips that will be useful in diplomacy, namely:

  1. Use the praise or insult option when talking with leaders of other factions. Because of this, you can improve your relationship or spoil it - depending on whether you care about peace with another group or want to wage war.
  2. Spend influence points wisely. You can use them to improve relations with other factions. They are also necessary to create new bases and annex sectors. The points are also used in establishing relations with neutral factions.
  3. Try to maintain positive relations with other factions. Unless you care about continuous wars, friendship with other factions in Age of Wonders: Planetfall is simply more profitable - it is easier to achieve pace objectives rather than the military ones. Also, there are plenty of territories to conquer on the map.
  4. Instead of using force to conquer colonies of other factions, try to buy them. This may require a large amount of energy, but in the long run, it is much more profitable than a military conflict.
