Last update: 18 June 2019

In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, there numerous monster families that include many different types. The number of enemies of a given type that you kill influences the combat difficulty. The following section includes basic information about different types of enemies and their progression system.

In the game you will meet numerous types of monsters, which are divided into many varieties. The game has a hidden mechanism of enemy progression, which calculates how much beast of a certain species you have killed so far. If you beat a certain number of enemies, their other options (color/elements) will start to appear. However, it is worth noting that the best type of enemies is also a chance for the best loot. In general, a variety of enemies can be classified because of:

  1. Elementary varieties - some animals are found in varieties that represent a certain element. The attacks of such enemies, in addition to injuries cause other negative effects. Fiery enemies burn Link by dealing damage over time. Icy and frost attacks may freeze you, and electric strikes explode with a shock - in such situation you drop your weapon and shield. Counter such enemies with opposing elements: attack fire with ice and vice versa to instantly kill your enemy.
  2. Color variations - In the game you can find the following shades of enemies: red, blue, black, white, silver. Each next color symbolizes a stronger enemy of this type. When you start the game, you will encounter red enemies. After defeating them, blue ones will spawn in their place. Of course, in more difficult locations and areas you will immediately encounter enemies in a stronger version.
  3. Bone varieties - at night you will encounter bone varieties of some enemies. It's enough that you attack them any they may shatter into pieces. Then run up to their head, hit it, and the enemy will be defeated.

Tips: If you don't want to complicate your gameplay too quickly, avoid enemies and hunt only for certain species of enemies (enemy camps).
