Workers and Resources: Interface Workers and Resources guide, tips

On this page of the guide to Workers and Resources you will find information on the game interface, as well as a few tidbits related to the choice of options in the new gameplay.

Last update: 05 April 2023

When starting a new game in Workers and Resources, the first choice you will have to make is what map to choose. You can choose a ready-made one from the pool (either developer-created or maps created by modders), but there is an alternative in form of a random map which is generated based on certain parameters such as the number of lakes and rivers, the density and number of forests, the landform and the number of hills.

New Game Menu

In this part of the guide, you'll get acquainted with the interface used to set the parameters of a new game. If you are new to Workers and Resources, choose a map that is as flat as possible and has few rivers, as the landform and water reservoirs produce additional difficulties and obstacles when designing your cities.

Default game settings on very easy level - Workers and Resources: Interface - Basics - Workers and Resources Guide
Default game settings on very easy level

After selecting the map, the game will take you to the next page where you can set the following starting parameters:

  1. 1. Population . An option only available after choosing a map with cities and roads - you begin a game with a set number of population and you don't have to invite them from abroad right away.
  2. 2. Money amount . Unlimited means that you don't have to worry about finances, easy means a lot of starting cash (10 million rubles and 2 million dollars). on medium you begin with 3,500,000 rubles and 1,000,000 dollars, the hardest setting is a meager 1,000,000 rubles and 500,000 dollars of starting money.
  3. 3. Realistic mode . Do not select this option if you want instant construction of buildings and roads. Moreover, in realistic mode, all materials, goods, and vehicles will have to be transported to and from a border crossing.
  4. 4. Citizens' Reaction . This setting determines how your citizens react to hardship, cold, hunger, and other unsatisfied needs.
  5. 5. Energy Management . Here you choose the level at which you want to govern production and management of electricity and fuel. Choosing the first option means no longer having to supply electricity to residential buildings and factories, you won't have to build power plants, and finally there'll be no need to build fuel stations and supply vehicles with fuel.. On the other hand, there is a separate option for full control over petrochemical industry, which will involve building oil wells, refineries, and managing the production of chemicals and plastics.
  6. 6. Water Management . With the help of this option, you can decide to what extent you want to deal with the sewage system and water supply network for citizens. If the option is enabled, you will need to build sewage treatment plants, sewage and water networks with water intakes and care for water quality. Moreover, you'll need to provide water to inhabitants wherever they are located - you can choose to transport it either by pipes or water tankers.
  7. 7. Seasons . Choose this option if you want a full winter/summer cycle with scorching heat and blizzards. Same as in the real world, during winter, traffic jams will ensue more often, snowploughs will have to clear the roads, the growing season of plants will be shortened, and your inhabitants will expect you to keep their buildings warm.
  8. 8. Building fires . This option determines whether you will need to build fire stations in your cities (remember that when it comes to large cities, you need more than one to cover the whole area) and how often fires will ensue.
  9. 9. Global Events . Choose this option if you want to experience additional challenges such as disease outbreaks, or fluctuating resource prices.
  10. 10. Pollution . With this option on, factories, fields, industrial buildings, sewage outflows will generate pollution which negatively affects the health of the inhabitants. To deal with the problem, you will have to place residential buildings away from industrial areas, as well as control the pollution.
  11. 11. Education Simulation . This is the time to decide how education will be handled in your city. Simple education will provide everyone with an automatic basic education, and also relieve parents who will be able to go to work. Complex education will force you to build primary schools and kindergartens, regardless of each option universities and orphanages are a separate matter.
  12. 12. Crime and Justice . Enabling this option will introduce another mechanic to your game that needs addressing. If enabled, you will need to build police stations, courts, and prisons. Regardless of the chosen option, civil service buildings are available for constructing.
  13. 13. Traffic Simulation . If enabled, with this option you can decide the priority on junctions and intersections - you can choose from traffic lights, priority to the right, and priority and yield signs.
  14. 14. Research . Allowing this option will make universities research centers for discovering technologies, which in turn will open up the possibility to produce advanced materials such as electronic and mechanical parts.
  15. 15. The Night/Day Cycle . You can choose this option to introduce a full night/day cycle to your soviet republic. Managing during the night is nice, but it will make building harder, the cars in your cities will move slower and your citizens may use more electricity.
  16. 16. Year of start . Here you can choose in what year you want to start. Currently , this only affects the availability of vehicles that you can buy, as by default they are only produced during a certain time period.
  17. 17. Vehicle Availability . "All" means being able to buy any vehicle regardless of the current date. With the next option, you can only purchase vehicles that are currently available based on production date, but they will be available indefinitely, while the final "according to the production date" means that you can only buy vehicles that match the current time period, e.g. Polonez will be available from 1978 to 2001.
