Valheim: Inventory management - tips, key shortcuts Valheim guide, walkthrough

Last update: 26 February 2021

On this page of the Valheim guide, you will learn how to manage items in your inventory.

In Valheim, each character has only 32 inventory slots (8 quick slots and 24 loot slots), and the default carrying limit has been set to 300. Proper inventory space management and the use of several useful keyboard shortcuts will save time and greatly speed up grouping and moving items from inventory to chest or cart.

Transferring objects

Items in Valheim can be moved in several ways. In addition to the standard drag-and-drop option, you can use another, much faster method. By holding down Control and clicking on an item (or stack of items) with the LMB, you can automatically move it from your inventory to a stash.

Remember that when using this method, resources or items will be automatically added to previously deposited stacks. In the image above, you can see that after storing amber, the items from the inventory will be added to those previously stored in the chest. If the stack is full, items will be assigned to the next free slot.

Stacks of items or resources can also be separated by holding down Shift and clicking LMB. The game will then show a window where you can use the slider to determine how you want to split the stack.

Removing items - is it possible?

At the time of writing this guide, there is no dedicated key in Valheim that removes or destroys an unwanted item. You have to deal with these items in a different way.

  1. Hide items in a chest;
  2. Drop items on the ground or into the water;
  3. Use the console, enable codes (imacheater), and enter the removedrops command. It will delete all nearby items lying on the ground, so make sure you don't accidentally remove something valuable. Once this is done, you can disable cheats by typing the iamacheater command again. The list of all cheats available in Valheim can be found on a separate page of this guide.

Stacks of wood and stones - how to place them?

Resources (wood and stones) can additionally be stacked in piles of 50 units to save valuable space in your inventory or to free up space in your chests - Valheim: Inventory management - tips, key shortcuts - Basics - Valheim Guide

Resources (wood and stones) can additionally be stacked in piles of 50 units to save valuable space in your inventory or to free up space in your chests. To build a stack of wood or stone, simply use a hammer and select the appropriate option from the build menu. If you need additional resources, you can destroy the pile and recover all the materials.

It should be noted here that piles of raw materials exposed to negative weather phenomena (heavy rain) can get destroyed – you will need to repair them from time to time - Valheim: Inventory management - tips, key shortcuts - Basics - Valheim Guide
