On this page of the Valheim guide, you will learn where to get seeds from and how to use them.
In Valheim, food and resources can be obtained in various ways – planting vegetables and trees is one of them. But before you can grow a garden and get food or plant a forest, you will need to get the right seeds.
Where to get the seeds from?
In Valheim, certain seeds such as Carrot seeds and Turnips can be found in specific biomes. The former can be found in the Black Forest and the latter in the Swamps. Carrot seeds are very distinctive – they come in the form of small white flowers, like the ones presented in the image above.
You can get tree seeds while logging - when you cut down a tree, you have a chance to get a certain type of seed. For example, by cutting down a beech, you can get Beech seed.
How to plant seeds?
Before you can start planting the seeds, you will first need to till the soil and for this, you will need a Cultivator. You will craft this tool in the forge – you need Bronze and Core wood (obtainable in the Black Forest). You can find all the relevant information about metal mining and smelting on a separate page of this guide.
Equip your character with a Cultivator, open the action menu with MMB, select Cultivate, and till a part of your land.
The area where you want to create, for example, a garden with carrots or turnips should be protected against animals that can eat your crops - a simple wooden fence will effectively stop all intruders.
Make sure you have the right seeds in your inventory, then open the cultivator menu and select, for example, carrots.
Plant the seeds in such a way that the vegetables have space to grow - if they are planted too close to each other, they won't grow. If you are wondering whether you planted the seed correctly, hover the cursor over the seed and see if you get a message that the vegetable is Healthy.
Once the seeds have been planted, you can wait for the vegetables to grow. After that, you can harvest and eat them, use them as an ingredient in another dish, or get another seed from them.
