In UnderRail, battles are played in turns - Turn fighting system | Game basics - Game basics - Underrail Game Guide

In UnderRail, battles are played in turns. What this means is that every character has a specific amount of movement points (MP) and action points (AP) to use. At the beginning, everyone has 30 MP (+3 extra points for every point in Agility above 5) and 50 AP. MP can be used only for moving a character in a given direction, but AP can be used for performing actions, as well as for movement (for example if you don't have any MP left). Every action, be it a weapon attack or using a skill, costs you a given amount of AP. For example, an attack with a knife costs 12 AP and an attack using a crossbow costs 25 AP. Using a spell can cost you 15, 18 or even more AP. If you use up your MP and MP, you end your turn. Now it's the opponent's time to act. There are no limits as for how many turns should a battle last. The fight ends when one of the sides is defeated or escapes the battlefield (for example if you retreat and leave the location where the battle took place).

Fighting in UnderRail is not easy. Every little mistake, for example miscalculated action points, can cost you life. Therefore, there is a quick save and quick load option in the game, which you will probably be using quite often. You should avoid getting into a battle with low HP, because you will be easily defeated. You should consider the fact that it is common to miss an attack, even from a short distance. Don't be surprised if you miss a big enemy when standing right in front of him and shooting using a crossbow. You will certainly receive some damage during a fight, so you will be forced to use Bandages (you can use them if you still have above 40% HP) and Health Hypos to restore your HP. Another way to heal yourself is to visit a doctor located on the 6 floor of the underground complex. The doctor will heal you for free, but you'll waste a lot of time if you have to go to him through several locations and then go back to continue the mission.
