The Great Book of Grudges and travelling underground TW: Warhammer Guide

Last update: 14 June 2016

Dwarves have access to two unique mechanisms, that (aside from the Greenskins who can also travel under the ground) are unavailable to other factions. Those are the grudges system and the possibility to travel underground.

Grudges

Grudges are, basically, additional objectives given to the player. It's one of the most important mechanisms when it comes to Dwarves, that influences series of things. Grudges are unique missions, that appear in the Great Book of Grudges with each hostile activity towards your settlement. Each time an enemy attacks you, kills (or wounds) your Hero / Lord, you will be given a mission (grudge) requiring you to do a similar task.

Additionally, grudges have their own requirements - you must complete them or they will influence the public order of your faction, as well as the relations with other Dwarven factions. The severity of this mechanism can be checked on the top of the screen, right next to the amount of gold you have in the treasury. Grudges that aren't taken care of will accumulate and have serious consequences - decreased public order, or can even cause a faction to declare war on your own. You should take care of them as quickly as possible - especially since they offer gold in return.

Grudges are also associated with the campaign. Victory in the long campaign can only be achieved if there are no unsolved grudges in the Great Book of Grudges. In case of the short campaign, you can get up to 9 severity.

From the author - there's a single problem with the grudges, bugs. Sometimes you will be given a grudge to solve that refers to a given faction of the Greenskins. During the next turn that very faction will be obliterated and normally the grudge will disappear as well. Sometimes, however, the grudge will still be there - thus preventing you from completing the campaign, as the faction you had to, for instance, attack is no longer there. This problem was partly solved by the latest patch, but it can still happen.

Moving underground

This mechanism is available to Dwarves and Greenskins. After selecting the required moving stance ('Use Underway') a Lord will be able to instantaneously move to the specified area, as if he teleported there. A number of interesting consequences are associated with it:

  • A Lord won't be able to attack another one, or a settlement afterwards.
  • The Lord can be intercepted by the enemy while using this method. In that case an encounter located underground, in a narrow cave-like room will initiate. You can't retreat from this battle, and you can't call in reinforcements. The army that is defeated during this encounter will be completely obliterated.
  • A Lord using this method is completely immune to the effects of the terrain.
  • By using this method you can get to the other side of the impassable terrain, such as mountains.
  • To be able to use this movement method the Lord needs to have a full move - you can't even move an inch. After moving by using this method the Lord uses up all his move.

This mechanism allows your Lords to move around the map freely, but it can sometimes force an encounter that you didn't plan.
