Last update: 11 May 2016

Among Greek countries, Epirus is in the worst position. It is not only involved in the war with Sparta, but also has to stand against its allies: Athens and Macedonia. On the north you'll find Ardiaei - their lands can be the perfect area to build up your strength for the upcoming war with other neighbors.

Epirus army consists of typical Hellenic units: hoplites, pikemen and citizen cavalry. Although spearmen are not as good as Spartans, other units are good enough to catch up not the best infantry.

Starting bonuses

Epirus is one of three Greek countries available in the game, so it has bonuses specific for them:

  • Classical Heritage: +2 cultural conversion
  • Fierce Independence: +10% melee defense for all units during battles in own or allied territory

In addition Epirus has two bonuses and one penalty:

  • Guardians of Dodona: Public order bonus (maximum of +4) from presence of Hellenic culture
  • Village Confederation: +10% wealth from minor settlements
  • Hellenic Mistrust: Major diplomatic penalty with all Hellenic factions (cultural aversion)

The most important available units

Militia hoplites

Cheap and effective in defense hoplites. Solid unit in the initial stage of the game.

Hoplites

Very well armored spearmen unit, capable to hold the enemy for longer times. Medium offensive abilities do not allow to quickly get rid of opponents.

Levy pikemen

Basic pikemen unit. Weak both in attack and in defense, after lining-up in phalanx formation will be able to defeat stronger enemy units.

Hellenic royal guard

Great armored pikemen, perfect as core of your army. You will need them in the final stage of the game, during fights with elite enemy units.

Peltasts

Skirmishers equipped with javelins and shield. They effectively eliminate poorly armored enemy projectile units.

Skirmisher cavalry

Mobile skirmishers with poor attack and weak armor. They are mostly used to harass light enemy infantry and possible attack on war machines.

Aspis companion cavalry

Great melee cavalry. Thanks to high melee defense and one of the best armors in the game, they are able to win even in longer fights. Good for breaking groups of enemy medium infantry and cavalry.

Greek royal cavalry

Shock cavalry. Weaker armored than Aspis companion cavalry but with much stronger charge. This unit should strike the enemy and then retreat and prepare to the next attack.
