In the family and politics tab you will find three important indicators that have influence over whole country.

Dominion is a indicator showing influence of your family members in comparison to other nobles. If dominion is big, then members of your family have larger total amount of influence. If it is small, then other nobles have larger influence. The indicator will lower drastically as the numbers of other nobles increase and with frequent use of intrigues.

Control shows you how much does other important people listen to your orders. Its level will change due to gather support intrigue, random events and solving conflicts between nobles. All those situations, except for random events, will force you to spend influence points. In other words, to increase control, you will often need to reduce dominion. Usually only temporary, until you refill your influence.

Power level depends on both those indicators. Low control and dominion level ends with lowering of power level and vice versa. Despite appearance, it's not about increasing it permanently, but manipulating it.

After moving your cursor on the power bar you will see under the faction name a list of modifiers that change with different levels of that factor. You will see that some of them are positive, other negative. High power level increase profits from taxes and army or horde integrity, but lowers public order and growth, while low power level decrease tax income, but increase growth. Loyalty is exception as it grows when power is balanced and drops when it moves in one or other direction.

As you see, it's not about increasing power, but changing it level depending on need. For province growth low power is better, while army and treasury are better with high power level. There is no such level that would only give profits, as even the balanced one have penalties to taxes.

Lowering the power is easiest done with a character. Let members of your family spend influence points on intrigues while other nobles gather them. Additionally, appoint other nobles as generals and governors and don't use adoption too frequently. It will greatly reduce dominion level, which will lead to lowering power. If you want to increase power, appoint family members for important positions, Win battles with family generals, When you will gather some influence, use gather support intrigue and adopt influential nobles to your family. Gather influence, that will increase your dominion, which you should use to increase control. Both those statistics lead to increasing power.
