You deal with traps ever since you complete the second chapter of the game and I recommend against ignoring them, because an accidental activation of a trap may contribute to Garrett's death or (in the best case) to alarming enemies to his current actions.

You can locate traps using focus, first of all because all of their elements are marked by the game in red (this also concerns connections between traps) and the devices that power them).
