On the following page of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening game guide you will find useful gameplay information and tips.

1 - Starting tips for Links Awakening - Basics - Links Awakening Guide
  1. You don't have to kill every enemy. Just simply pass them, but be careful not to get on their path. And remember, every monster (except Bosses and Mini-Bosses) will revive after some time.
  2. Cut the grass, you can find lots of things underneath it.
  3. While searching the dungeons you can encounter an Owl Statue. You will need a Stone Beak to be able to interact with it and receive a clue. The Stone Beak can be found in one of the chests.
  4. If you come across a locked door without a keyhole while searching the dungeons, in order to open them just kill all the monsters in the room.
  5. Collect Pieces of Heart to gain more life.
  6. Always check if you are running out of magic powder, bombs, etc. Fortunately, you can find plenty of them during your journey or just buy them in the store.
  7. If you want to regain life points, go to the fairies. Killed monsters drop life-renewing hearts. Those hearts you can also find under the grass.
  8. Look for a broken piece of wall in the caves or dungeons. Place a bomb under it and you will find a secret passage to another room.
  9. If you don't know what to do next, you can always call Old Man Ulrira on one of the phones in Telephone Booths scattered all over the Koholit Island. He will give you helpful hints about your current challenge.
  10. A good idea to deal with getting stuck in the game is also checking the Memories screen by pressing X with the map open. This feature tracks speeches from the owl and other key characters.
  11. When exploring caves or dungeons, watch out for broken floor pieces. Standing on them can be very dangerous. Go through them quickly so that they don't fall under your weight.
  12. One of the most useful additions to the remake is map markers. To remember about returning to the cave or other place where you couldn't get to every room or treasure chest just drop a marker.
