How to get new weapons and gadgets?
In TLoU 2, there are three ways to get new equipment:
- Automatically by making enough progress - Ellie and Abby will receive basic equipment at certain points in the game, which consists of "starter" weapons and crafting blueprints.
- By exploring the world - You can find new weapons and gadgets in various locations.
- By unlocking passive skills - Some passive abilities enable you to craft new types of items.
How to upgrade weapons and gadgets?
Weapons can only be improved at workbenches. You get upgrades by spending scrap. The whole process has been described in detail on the Workbenches and upgrading weapons page.
Some gadgets can be improved with passive skills. You can, for example, increase the effectiveness of health kits, or increase bomb damage.
Can you lose a weapon?
Firearms, as well as the bow and crossbow, are indestructible and cannot be lost except in situations that are part of the story. Fortunately, even if your weapons are taken from you, you will be able to recover them quickly.
Melee weapons, have limited durability - except Ellie's switchblade which can be used, e.g. to perform an infinite number of stealth kills. Each melee weapon has a certain number of uses before it gets destroyed. Fortunately, Ellie and Abby are able to use skills that allow them to repair a particular weapon once. For more information, check out the Melee weapon - is it indestructible? page in our guide.
Abby can also use disposable Shivs that work the same as in the first The Last of Us - their primary use is to eliminate clickers, but each blade can be used only once. After that, it gets destroyed and you need to craft another one.
List of weapons and gadgets - Ellie
Ellie has a switchblade - a small weapon that is mainly used in stealth kills. The switchblade is indestructible, but it inflicts little damage. This makes it a weak choice for direct confrontation. Look for a bigger melee weapon or simply start using firearms.
Ellie can pick up a variety of melee weapons found in the game world, e.g. baseball bats, hammers or machetes. It is best to look for weapons that have a large number of uses, i.e. about six. We also advise you to get Make melee upgrades passive ability that allows you to repair and strengthen your current weapon (once).
This is Ellie's primary weapon - she has it from the very beginning of the game. The pistol doesn't inflict heavy damage - aim at the heads of opponents. It is also the only gun (not counting the submachine gun from Santa Barbara) on which you can install a silencer. Use a silencer to kill enemies quietly and remove it during a direct confrontation.
The rifle is also available from the beginning of the game - the game unlocks it after advancing in to the Patrol stage. It is a great ranged weapon, especially since one of its improvements is a scope. You can turn that weapon into a sniper rifle. We also recommend unlocking the Hold breath passive ability which makes it easier to fire shots.
You get this weapon during the exploration of Seattle Downtown which takes place during the Seattle, Day 1 chapter. Revolver can be useful in those situations where you are running out of ammunition for other guns. You can also quickly switch between pistol and revolver to have 1 hand gun with silencer and 1 without. Try to get the upgrade that increases the damage inflicted by the revolver.
You can find this weapon in the Downtown and the way to reach it is described on the Shotgun - how to get it? page. It is, of course, an excellent weapon for inflicting large damage over a short distance and for weakening powerful monsters. We recommend the upgrade that increases the number of shells in the shotgun - this weapon takes some time to reload.
You get the bow during the Hillcrest stage - check out Bow - how to get it? page to see when you get it. The best use for a bow is, of course, to kill opponents quietly from greater distances. Remember to adjust the crosshair accordingly to the distance. Get the Rangefinder upgrade for the bow to improve your aiming. You will also be able to craft explosive arrows, which are ideal for attacking groups of opponents.
Silenced Submachine Gun
Ellie can obtain this weapon in the final part of the story campaign, in the Santa Barbara chapter. It is a pretty good weapon for silent elimination of enemies thanks to the installed silencer which, unlike the ones for the pistol, is indestructible. You can often use this weapon to attack enemies without the risk of alarming the entire area.
Ellie is able to produce health kits from the start of the game, specifically from the Patrol stage onward. Do not ignore lost health points, because in TLoU 2 the health bar doesn't regenerate automatically. However, avoid crafting the maximum number of health kits - you can also find them in the game world.
For more details on this and other disposable gadgets, see the Crafting - a list of crafting items page.
Ellie learns how to make Molotov cocktails in the Patrol stage after she receives this item from Dina. Molotovs are a very versatile gadget - you can use them to set fire to infected and living opponents. It is best to throw them at enemies standing close to each other (including soldiers travelling with dogs) to set them all on fire with a single attack.
The first bomb can be found in the Downtown stage - from now on, you can make these items yourself. Initially, the only use for bombs is to stun enemies temporarily or expose them to attacks. You can later unlock a skill that upgrades this gadget to a smoke bomb that also blinds enemies and makes it easier to avoid or attack them.
The first mine can be found in the Capitol Hill stage. After that, Ellie will be able to produce more of them herself. It's a great gadget for killing dogs and strong infected, assuming you use it correctly. Set up trap mines in narrow passageways and corridors, then use throwing objects to lure opponents into those places.
List of weapons and gadgets - Abby
Abby doesn't have a switchblade, but you can unlock shivs blades for her - each one of them is disposable and their main use is to eliminate clickers (stealth attack or after being caught by a monster). Alternatively, you can use them to kill opponents you have grabbed faster.
Abby can pick up various melee weapons found in the game world, e.g. baseball bats, hammers or machetes. It is best to look for weapons that have a large number of uses, i.e. about six. Buy Craft melee upgrades and Improved melee weapon upgrades passive skills to repair and strengthen these weapons.
Abby's primary weapon - it can be used from The Stadium stage onwards. As with Ellie's pistol, try to aim at the heads. Otherwise, the shots will only scratch the opponents. This is the only weapon that can use a silencer.
This is Abby's second starting weapon - available from The Stadium stage onward. Abby's rifle has better fire rate than Ellie's, but is not as effective at attacking from a greater distance. You can equip it with a scope and an upgrade that makes it more stable while shooting.
Double Barrel Shotgun
You get the shotgun during the Hostile Territory stage and the way of reaching it is described on the Shotgun - how to get it? page. As with the Ellie's shotgun, the ideal use for this weapon is to fight living opponents and powerful monsters at short distances. The shotgun's base damage is high but this can be further increased with one of the upgrades. You can also unlock the passive ability to produce incendiary shells.
You can find the first hunting pistol in the safe in the On Foot stage - more information in the Safes chapter. It is a much more interesting weapon than the revolver used by Ellie. The hunting pistol fires strong single shots and it works great at a distance - you can make it even better by buying the scope upgrade. You can craft ammunition for this pistol.
The crossbow is acquired in The Coast stage - more information on the Crossbow - how to obtain? page. It is a great weapon for stealth attacks. It is easier to hit a target with the crossbow than with the bow, especially after equipping it with a scope. The advantage of this weapon is that many of the bolts fired can be recovered from enemy corpses. Unfortunately, you can't produce explosive bolts.
You get the flamethrower in The Descent stage - more information on the Flamethrower - how to get? page. It is an ideal weapon for setting infected on fire, and you can also use it to attack their "elite" variants like shamblers. After setting an enemy on fire, you can wait until it loses all its health points or you can kill it with another weapon.
Abby can produce health kits starting from The Stadium stage. They work the same as Ellie's. You can also increase the healing effectiveness with one of the passive abilities. Don't forget to leave a free slot for at least 1 health kit - you can find them in the game world.
Abby can craft pipe bombs right from the beginning - from The Stadium stage. They are great for attacking groups of opponents who are unaware of Abby's presence and do not move. A pipe bomb explodes shortly after it lands on the ground. We recommend getting the passive abilities that increase the range and effectiveness of bombs.
Bottles and bricks are back in TLoU2 as throwing items. Both characters can pick them up, and you can carry one of these items at a time. Throwing objects have 3 main uses:
- Distracting opponents - This is especially effective when you encounter monsters that run to where the thrown object has landed. Later in the game, you can use throwing objects to lure enemies to your traps (e.g. trap mines), as well as lure infected to living opponents.
- Breaking windows- Throwing objects can help you, for example, break a window to make an entrance.
- Stun enemies - An opponent who is hit by a bottle or brick will be stunned for a short time (this does not apply to stronger monsters). You can use this, for example, to attack them with a melee attack, or to quickly sneak past them.
