Combat in The Bard's Tale 4 Game The Bard's Tale 4 Guide and Walkthrough

Last update: 21 September 2018

An important part of the gameplay in The Bard's Tale IV is combat. Exploration of the dungeons is mostly about combat. Below, you can see learn the most important aspects of combat.

Combat Preparation

Before engaging in any fight, make sure your chances for victory are good. Get closer to the enemy and see what color they are. You can meet the following colors:

  • Green - a group of enemies in this color is weaker than your team. You should have no problems defeating them.
  • Orange - these enemies are roughly as powerful as you. The fights will be close. You still have good chances.
  • Red - don't even think about fighting them. They're on higher levels than your team, they're attacks are much stronger. In some cases, they can kill your soldiers with one hit. Go back to them when you level up.

Make a decision - either back off or fight. But if you want to get to a particular place, and there's a powerful enemy blocking the way, you might try sneaking around them. You have to enter the walking mode and avoid sources of light. Otherwise, you will be spotted and you will have to fight.

Fighting

Once a fight is inevitable, the combat mode will be engaged. It happens in the turn-based system. The entire team has a pool of action points, which can be spent throughout a turn [1]. Additionally, adepts and bards have mana points, which aren't dependent on action points.

All characters move on a grid - Combat in The Bards Tale 4 Game - Basics - The Bards Tale 4 Game Guide

All characters move on a grid. Each side has 8 fields. The characters can only move around these. There's no way of getting to the opponent's side. During a turn, any of your living characters can perform actions. You can choose one of the six abilities available for all characters [2]. They can be configurated to a degree. Just choose the "Ksiega Bieglosci" in the equipment. This will let you change the first four skills of a character.

Each skill has different properties. It costs a certain number of action or magic points. Only a few skills are free. They also have a limited range. This means that you cannot kill any enemy on the map. You can check the range on the skills bar. This will prompt an information panel that shows you all the information about the skill.

Setting up your team is also very important. Each class should have its own place on the board. Adepts and Bards should be on the second line, best protected by a warrior on the first line. Both classes should only enter the first line when they absolutely have to. In any other case, the first row is only for warriors and rogues.

Always focus attacks on one of the enemies. Enemies rarely are so weak so as to be killed with one hit. So, you should focus attacks on a single enemy and eliminate the threat.

Additional Tips

You and your enemies can perform attacks that take time to hit. There is a specified number of turns after which the attack can be blown to the opponent. During this time, another indicator appears above the character's life bar. It describes the "endurance" of a specified attack. If it drops to 0, the attack cannot be performed. Also, this indicator is sensitive to damage caused by spell points.

Pay attention to the level of your opponents armor - Combat in The Bards Tale 4 Game - Basics - The Bards Tale 4 Game Guide

Pay attention to the level of your opponent's armor. It appears as a numeric shield next to the health bar, as shown in the picture above. This means how much damage will be absorbed by the armor. If you launch an attack with a force less than the armor, the enemy will not take any damage.
