Defeating AI in a game of chess may be one of the most difficult puzzles in System Shock Remake because this puzzle pretty much requires you to know how to play chess. From this page of the guide you will learn where to play chess in the Delta Grove, how to start the game and win, as well as how to get the unique prizes for defeating the AI opponent.

There is a chess board with virtual pieces on board the Citadel in System Shock Remake. You can play a game against the artificial intelligence.

The board is in the central part of Delta Grove. This is a large dome, which you can reach by a cart moving from the Executive deck. Get rid of the monsters from the area so that they do not interfere with the puzzle.

You can control the green pieces - highlight them and choose the place you want them to be moved to (you can only use the allowed moves). There are buttons on the sides of the board. Use them to go up and have a better view of the entire board.

You can also use Turbo-Motion Boots V2 or V3 to be even higher.

Rules of the puzzle

When you reach the board, the game will be in progress - System Shock Remake: Chess puzzle - En Passant achievement - Puzzles - System Shock Remake Guide

When you reach the board, the game will be in progress. The initial placement of green and orange pieces is random. This means that, unfortunately, there is no easy solution for winning the game of chess.

Your general task is to win the game in a few moves. Name of the related achievement - En Passant - suggests that you can win the game by using a special play using a pawn. However, this is not required to win the mini-game. All that matters is to win against the AI opponent who controls the orange pieces.

A good idea is to save the game before making any moves. This will allow you to easily repeat failed moves by loading the previous save. You can also use a chessbot - you can use the AI to help after copying and pasting the starting layout of the pieces on the board and displaying the suggested moves.

If you lose, the board can get reset - System Shock Remake: Chess puzzle - En Passant achievement - Puzzles - System Shock Remake Guide

If you lose, the board can get reset. The game of chess will then start from the beginning. This will make it very difficult for you to win, because you have to win the whole game, not just the specific part. This is another reason to save your progress in advance.

Rewards for winning a game of chess

By winning the game of chess, you get:

  1. Micro Pocket Dimension Ware - You'll find it in the newly unlocked room. It is one of the two wares that increase the inventory capacity permanently, allowing you to carry more items (both implants are described on the How to increase inventory? page).
  2. En Passant Steam achievement.
