Steelrising: The lanterns of the dead - walkthrough Steelrising guide, walkthrough

This page of the guide to Steelrising presents the walkthrough of the quest The lanterns of the dead. Vestals hide many dark secrets. We suggest how to find the Foundry ledger, Vitriol and Choderlos de Laclos.

Last update: 10 October 2022

Vestals are driving ordinary people mad and killing them. You must take care of them. This page of our Steelrising guide contains a walkthrough of The lanterns of the dead quest. You'll learn where to find the foundry ledger, Vitriol and Choderlos de Laclos.

Once you visit the Cordeliers Convent after the To Les Invalides quest, you'll receive a new mission, The Recluse of the Abyss, from Maximilien de Robespierre. This, however, is not the only task he has for you. Talk to him again and he'll give you another job.

Mission plan

First, you must find out what are the Vestal lanterns made of. You need a list of metals. If you already have it, the conversation will move on automatically. This lets you immediately progress to the next objective. If you haven't found the information yet, you'll learn where it is from the foundry ledger section. Then you must find something to destroy the lantern with (check the Vitriol section). The final stage of the task is obtaining a cannonball and finding an engineer (check the Choderlos de Laclos section).

Foundry ledger

To find the ledger you must first head to Les Invalides. You must go to the Forge, where you fought the Unstable Forger. If you need a reminder on how to get there, check The Master of the Machines page.

Once you're there, leave the building through the gate - Steelrising: The lanterns of the dead - walkthrough - Side missions - Steelrising Guide, Walkthrough

Once you're there, leave the building through the gate. You'll end up in a square filled with Automat racks. Right next to them you'll see some stairs. Climb up them, then climb up the next staircase.

Go through the upper floor (watch out for the enemies). You'll find the ledger on a table behind the staircase leading down. You can now return to the Cordeliers Convent.

Vitriol

After looking through the list, Lavoisier will let you know Vitriol could deal with them. Talk to Bailly. Fortunately, the scholar is in the Convent as well.

He'll direct you to the Louvre and his observatory. He'll also give you a storage key. The Louvre is located in the Tuileries area. We've described how to get there on the Troubled Waters page.

However, if you already have the Alchemist's Ram power, you can significantly shorten the journey - Steelrising: The lanterns of the dead - walkthrough - Side missions - Steelrising Guide, Walkthrough

However, if you already have the Alchemist's Ram power, you can significantly shorten the journey. Once you reach Tuileries, follow the path as described in the previously mentioned quest. However, after passing the first Vestal and two tunnels, stop. You will recognize the place by the fact that it is guarded by three Light Jaguars (you can read about them on a separate page - Felines). Defeat them and destroy the wall marked in the above screenshot.

This will lead you straight to the square in front of Palais des Tuileries (an important location in the Monsieur Necker's two treasures quest). The area's guarded by a Butcher (more about it on the Cooks page). The palace entrance, meanwhile, is guarded by two Light Jaguars and a Master-at-Arms (more about it on the Guards page) which can also attack you.

There's no need to enter the palace, however - Steelrising: The lanterns of the dead - walkthrough - Side missions - Steelrising Guide, Walkthrough

There's no need to enter the palace, however. Opposite the building entrance is a gate you can force open. It will take you straight to the Louvre. You'll end up near the place where you faced the Unstable Statuary Ram.

Now head to Bailley's Observatory. Reach the Vestal in the courtyard behind the Louvre and head to the other wing of the palace. You'll be attacked by a Light Jaguar once you're there.

There's no need to go upstairs to the observatory itself though - Steelrising: The lanterns of the dead - walkthrough - Side missions - Steelrising Guide, Walkthrough

There's no need to go upstairs to the observatory itself though. Unlock the door on the ground floor in the room in front of the stairs.

On the left side of the room you'll find the needed vitriol - Steelrising: The lanterns of the dead - walkthrough - Side missions - Steelrising Guide, Walkthrough

On the left side of the room you'll find the needed vitriol. Search the chest to the right as well. There is a Carriage Token inside. You can use it to teleport to a horseless carriage.

Return to the vehicle. You can head to the Cordeliers Convent and personally notify Robespierre of your success, or write to him through the Mail menu in the carriage.

You must now look for cannonballs to fill with vitriol and their creator.

Choderlos de Laclos

You can only continue the quest after defeating The Centaur during The Recluse of the Abyss main quest. You also need to release de Laclos from the coffin (you'll need Choderlos de Laclos Echoes).

Talk to de Laclos. You'll find him in Marat's quarters. You can get there easily via the earlier unlocked elevator. After the conversation, head to the Cordeliers Convent. You'll trigger a cutscene and complete the quest.
