A simple defensive mission - Mission 5 - Last Stand - Campaign - Legacy of the Void - StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void - Game Guide and Walkthrough

A simple defensive mission. You have a well developed base, place to set another one and a modest army. Immediately start training new workers and send the army to destroy the zenith stones [Z1-Z3]. In theory these buildings are supposed to wound your soldiers, but they will be doing it very rarely. Nearby zerg might be more troublesome. Whenever you see zerg near the building, first get rid of them and then of the construction.

Start improving your defenses while destroying the buildings - Mission 5 - Last Stand - Campaign - Legacy of the Void - StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void - Game Guide and Walkthrough

Start improving your defenses while destroying the buildings. First create a small group of melee and ranged fighting units which you will move to endangered positions. At the same time, place pylons on the top of each stairs and start building turrets. You must block all entrances, so the pylons must be positioned slightly behind or on the sides of turrets. In addition to photon cannons and khaydarin monoliths, you will also need shield batteries to automatically regenerate turret's shields. There should be more photon cannons than anything else, and the monoliths should be the second in quantity. You should build a wall of cannons, thus blocking access to other defense lines and the base. Monoliths should be positioned on the most advanced positions, at the side of the stairs. Their range is very high, allowing them to attack the stairs and thus making the battle easier for photon cannons. They will also eliminate aerial enemy units which have too long reach. It is also wise to position them behind the photon cannons, so that both turret types will be able to attack simultaneously. Shield batteries should be placed in such ways that a single one will be able to load few turrets at once.

The rest of the mission will be about constant defending. Block all entrances. Build turrets but don't forget about training units as well. The attacks will come from all four corners of the map, so sometimes you must reinforce some sides. Use resources on new buildings and upgrades of the already existing ones, build your army with what will remain. You will receive the additional objective around 22 minute and it can be completed around 30 minute. With strong enough fortifications you will be able to survive even much longer.

As you progress in the mission, the enemy attacks will become stronger. At first, enemy positions will be located only in the corners of the map, but then they will get closer to the stairs. Zergling attacks soon will be accompanied by hydralisks and ultralisks and later in the mission you will also face many aerial units and hybrids. At first the attacks will come from single directions, but expect simultaneous assaults even on all entrances at once after a while. There will be too much enemies to even think about counterattacking, so don't even think about leaving an open entrance to the temple. Don't forget to position few turrets around the temple or place a strong patrol group there, as the enemy will be using alighting.

You can also position few melee fighting units in front of the wall. They will focus the first zerg assault on them. Stalkers can prove to be very useful here due to their ability to teleport on short distance. Centurions will stun enemy units, allowing the turrets to quickly finish them up, and dark templars will be jumping between them, making their elimination faster. With the warp gates you will be able to teleport your units to the location of the destroyed buildings if rebuilding them will be impossible at that time, so it is wise to place even six such buildings. Don't forget about using Spear of Adun's abilities as well.

The mission ends once you reach the required objectives and once you will press the temple reload button. Reload can be done at any time, even when all the defense lines have fallen and the enemies will start destroying your base. Because of that, wait with the decision for as long as you need, even if you will no longer have anything to protect yourself.
