In the game, there are no standard difficulty levels. Instead, you can choose one of the available modes, which creating a new character. These modes influence only the penalty for the death of your character, and on the opponents and the availability of resources.

  • Normal - Your character respawns on his ship after dying and loses 30% of the Pixels in the equipment.
  • Hardcore - Your character respawns on his ship after dying and loses 30% of the Pixels in the equipment and drops all the items in the place where he died.
  • Permadeath - Your character does not respawn and is deleted.

For the new players, the Normal mode is recommended. The death in Starbound is a quite frequent occurrence, especially at the initial stages, which is why it is best mode to start your adventure.

The Hardcore mode is similar to the previous one, where the difference is that you lose all of your equipment after you die. You can retrieve your equipment if you return to the place where your character died. The only item that always remains in the inventory is the Matter Manipulator.

Permadeath is recommended only for the experienced players. The character that dies in this mode is automatically deleted and you cannot play with it anymore.
