On the following page of the Songs of Conquest game guide, we have presented useful information on military enlistment and soldier advancement.

Recruiting soldiers

The army is a basic good. Without it, you won't get far, which is why the army can be recruited in several different ways.

First, as you explore the world, you may encounter troops who want to join you. They will be shown on the map as neutral troops of your faction. Unfortunately, before you interact with them, you cannot tell if the soldiers will join you or attack you.

It is also worth looking out for tents on the map. There are allied units waiting for you at these locations as well, and they will be happy to join you if you give them the chance. If you don't want soldiers, then you can choose gold instead.

You can also hire warriors from neutral buildings of your faction. Just look out for them and interact with them. Unfortunately, the units you recruit in them are more expensive than the ones you acquire in friendly settlements.

The last and surest way to build up your military power is to hire armies in settlements that belong to you - Songs of Conquest: Recruiting and Advancing Soldiers - Military - Songs of Conquest Guide

The last and surest way to build up your military power is to hire armies in settlements that belong to you. All you have to do is select a trustee and interact with it at the village "town hall" or rally point, which is a small building that allows you to recruit soldiers from other settlements of your country. Remember that in the case of the latter, you can choose any village from which you want to hire soldiers (the list of your villages is above the portraits).

It is worth noting that you cannot hire as many units as you like. Every turn your troop pool increases depending on the structures you have built. Additionally, each settlement has its own separate army resource. Therefore, it is important to put up rallying points in strategic villages. They allow an overview of wards from different settlements (you can learn more about buildings from the Settlement Building and Development page).

Also, within a single unit, you have to reckon with the army limit. You can only combine ("pack") a certain number of soldiers into a squad. However, with proper research in the economics section, this limit can be pushed. You can learn more about developing technologies on a separate page of the guide: Research and Raw Materials.

Some of the above ways to recruit come with a cost, of course. Most soldiers are hired with money. However, they need the right buildings to do so. Some stronger units also require special raw materials for recruitment.

Promotion and removal of units

Almost all units in the game have their own stronger versions - Songs of Conquest: Recruiting and Advancing Soldiers - Military - Songs of Conquest Guide

Almost all units in the game have their own stronger versions. In order to be able to train them, you must have upgraded buildings. However, it is worth noting that in the case of medium and large buildings, their development will also be connected with having some other structure (we write about this on the aforementioned page about building settlements).

With upgraded buildings, you can hire new units just as you could with basic. The only inconvenience is that if you have soldiers of the first level in your army, you cannot train them at the assembly point - you have to go to the settlement that has the appropriate structure.

On the other hand, if you have no use for a branch, you can remove it. Simply select the entity by right-clicking on its portrait in the upper left corner of the screen and confirm the removal with a green "tick".
