There are many spells in the game and some of them are not used in combat

Magic plays a vital role in Risen 3. You can well use it to win fights, although it is most useful in other situations, e.g. when you want to boost your character's defenses. These are several things that are worth knowing:

  • There are two different ways, in which you can use magic. The first one is using scrolls and the upside of this method is that you do not need to get prepared to cast the spell, in any particular way. Unfortunately, each scroll is of one use only and after you cast the spell, it disappears from the inventory. It is best to save up scrolls for the times of greatest need and cast the spells only if necessary. Apart from that, I recommend against buying them in great numbers, because the prices are steep, in most cases, and it is better to spend the gold, e.g. on training.
  • The other way to use magic becomes available after you join one of the three main factions of the game. You can then visit teachers of magic and pay for the training, thanks to which the spells that you pick, will appear on the list of the available actions permanently (you map them in the same way as, e.g. melee weapons).
  • There are two serious handicaps, when it comes to using magic in the abovementioned way. First of all, you can unlock only those of the spells that are connected with the faction that you choose - demon hunters specialize in rune magic, natives specialize in voodoo magic and mages use the magic of crystals. Secondly, it is not free to learn spells. For learning the magic of the demon hunters, you pay with volumes of Ancient Knowledge, for native magic with Jade, and you pay crystal mages with Magic Crystals. Therefore, it is best to collect these items from the very beginning of the game and not sell them.
  • There is one more limitation on the spells that your character learned by heart, e.g. cooldown time. This means that you cannot keep casting a spell and you need to wait each time, after you use it, for it to recharge. Fortunately, cooldown times can be cut shorter, e.g. thanks to certain skills.
  • Remember that you can create new spells on your own, although you need a specific proficiency for that, and you also need the necessary ingredients. If you explore the game world thoroughly, however, obtaining the ingredients is not going to be a problem to you.
  • As mentioned above, not all spells are offensive. Do not ignore these spells, which you can use e.g. to heal yourself, summon magical allies or damage locks in chests.
  • If you are serious about taking up magic, it is a good idea to develop the Magic attribute from the beginning of the game to have it reach high values sufficiently fast.
  • Some monsters may be immune to a certain type of magic, although you will always be informed of this kind of limitations. Fortunately, this works both ways so, in a situation, in which conventional weapons are ineffective, you can always resort to magic.
