One of the objectives of Chapter 4 of Return to Monkey Island involves obtaining a Brrr Muda Island Golden Key. Our walkthrough shows where to find the key and how to defeat the Ice Queen in Contest of Intelligence, Contest of Seriousness, and Contest of Heartiness.

Getting to Brrr Muda Island
Brrr Muda Island is the name of an icy island in the northern part of the archipelago . One of the golden keys you are looking for is found there.
You will be stopped at the 19th Parallel on your first attempt to reach Brrr Muda Island. You'll be left with a puzzle which requires you to fill a Customs Form and having limes (this puzzle is explained in Obtaining 5 keys to the safe page of our guide).
Meeting the Ice Queen
After reaching the island, go through the town and bring up the island map. Choose Ice Castle from it. You have to take the long path to the top. The further fragments of the location will be gradually revealed as you pass them.
At the top you will meet the Ice Queen , who is wearing a crown with the golden key. For obvious reasons, she will not give it to Guybrush.
The hero has to become the new Queen and this means that the current Queen must be defeated in 3 contests. We have described them below.
Winning the Contest of Heartiness
For each contest, you have 2 options to start them:
- first - talking to the Ice Queen in her Ice Palace and challenging her to a duel;
- second - reaching the Town Hall building in the town - you have to go to the room related to the given competition and ring the bell to summon the queen.
Contest of Heartiness involves consuming as many fish as possible . To be able to compete, you need to deliver the needed fish. From the conversation you will learn what species of fish you need - the type of fish needed is random and in our case, we needed to get Lumpsuckers.
Return to Melee Island , head to the High Street section, and visit the Cod's Wallop gift shop . Talk to the fisherman and choose the option to buy fish. Select the correct type.
If you already have any purchased fish from Cod's Wallop, you can replace them with the species that is required to play the competition.
Go back to Brrr Muda Island and enter the Town Hall in the town. Go to the Heartiness Room .
Put the purchased fish in the bowl and then use the bell to summon the queen. Attempting to win the competition by playing fair will end in failure - Guybrush will lose. Fortunately, all competitions can be repeated any number of times.
Leave Brrr Muda Island Island and board the LeChuck's Ship . There are no hostile pirates on the ship and you can start exploring it right away.
Go below deck and visit the Galley where Putra used to work. You will find Putra's Demon Pepper here - take it.
Return to the Heartiness Room. Use pepper on the fish in the bowl and then ring the bell again. After the competition starts, do not take the fish from the bowl, but select the Lumpsucker fish from Guybrush's inventory and place it on the hero's plate. The queen will be the only one to taste spicy fish and will lose the competition.
Winning the Contest of Intelligence
This competition is about solving a mathematical puzzle . Start the competition for the first time to get to know its course - it is held in the Mezzanine room in the Town Hall building.
Cheating attempts during the test will be unsuccessful. The Queen will win, but you can repeat the competition as many times as you like.
To get the upper hand, travel to the Ice Palace on Brrr Muda Island. To the right of the throne you can find Matches .
Travel to Scurvy Island and to the Camp. You can find Firewood here - see the screenshot for exact location.
Once you have both items, go back to Mezzanine in Town Hall. Place the wood in the fireplace located to the left of the competition area. Set fire to the wood with the matches .
You can ring the bell again and repeat the competition. The melting hall will distract the queen . You can use this to quickly swap Algebra Paper . After analyzing the tests, the judge will declare you the winner.
Winning the Contest of Seriousness
This competition is about keeping your face serious when telling jokes . Activate the contest for the first time to get to know its course - it is held in the Back Room in the Town Hall building. The first attempt will result in a tie (provided you've not chosen the laugh dialogue option).
To gain the upper hand, you need a unique joke book and getting one is not easy.
Return to Melee Island and visit the Governor's Mansion . You can ignore the line in front of the building as you won't be stopped. Talk to Carla about Disaster Relief following the earthquake. Select the I want to rebuild local business dialogue option, which involves bringing back local businesses, such as Scumm Bar. You will receive an IOU document .
If you have already selected a different project, you can talk to Carla again and ask to change it.
Travel to the ruins of Scumm Bar in the docks . You need to talk to the cook here and show him the IOU document - he will be happy about the planned repairs and let you take the Carla's Cookbook .
Return to the estate with the book. Deliver it to the governness. You can now choose a new book - borrow The Endless Tale of the Voyage That Would Never End .
Return to the ship and travel to LeChuck's Ship . After reaching the main deck , talk to Apple Bob who this time won't attempt to throw Guybrush from the deck.
Ask to retrieve the Joke Book you gave him in Chapter 2. In return, give him the book that you picked up from the Melee Island mansion.
Return to the Back Room on Brrr Muda Island and ring the bell to repeat the competition. Select a joke book from the inventory and use it on the queen. You can choose any joke - you will make the queen laugh and she will lose the competition.
Acquire the Brrr Muda Island Golden Key
After winning all 3 competitions, Guybrush will be appointed the new Queen and strip the crown that was handed over to him, thus obtaining the Gold Key . You can choose any dialogue options during the coronation.
