You start the game as Rebecca, but Billy becomes available as a playable character after few dozen of minutes. Unless the current event in the game makes it impossible, you can freely switch between these characters. The differences between the characters aren't large, but in general it is easier to play as Billy since he has greater resistance to enemy attacks. Each character has also a unique ability - Rebecca can combine items and chemicals (a simple crafting) and Billy is able to push heavy items.

What's very important, during the whole game you must take care of both characters and the character you aren't currently controlling can get wounded and die. Check regularly whether Rebecca or Billy doesn't need to heal themselves and if they need more ammunition. Try to also help the inactive partner in a more direct way - save him from trouble and don't leave alone in a room filled with monsters.

Important - You can control in a limited way the inactive character by using the right analog stick. Use this option only if the situation requires it.

Important - If the inactive character is attacked, he will call help using the radio. In that case you can quickly run towards him or (a better idea) switch to him and take control of his movements.

You can give orders to the partner controlled by artificial intelligence. The basic order is being activated by pressing one button on the pad - you can tell your ally to follow you or wait somewhere. In addition to that, you can select a status from the menu list shown on the picture above. Available commands are:

  • Attack - attack the encountered enemies
  • Idle - don't attack the enemies
  • Solo - stay where you are
  • Team - follow me
  • Change - switch characters
