Inventory management in Resident Evil 2 Resident Evil 2 Guide and Walkthrough

Last update: 24 January 2019

The hero's default equipment in Resident Evil 2 has 8 free spaces for items. You can also store items in special black boxes and you can expand your inventory capacity.

What do you always carry with you?

Example of "travel" equipment.

When playing Resident Evil 2 the player should always carry with him/her the following items:

  1. At least one firearm with ammunition,
  2. At least one stronger drug: a mixture of herbs or a healing spray,
  3. Additional weapon: knife or grenade (frag or flash) - they will help you to push away the enemy who throws himself on you (which in some cases, e.g. when it is a licker or a Tyrant, can be fatal!). Grenades are usually a good choice because they stack up to 3 grenades in one field.

Tip: manage weapon upgrades wisely. Accessories such as Claire's UZI silencer or Leon's rifle butt improve the performance of the weapon, but at the same time, make the weapon take up two slots in the equipment. If you haven't collected regular hip bags that increase capacity, you may have to travel without one of the sidearms.

Disposal of unnecessary items

You dont need unchecked items. - Inventory management in Resident Evil 2 - Survival guide - Resident Evil 2 Guide
You don't need "unchecked" items.

You can get rid of any item that is not story-related. However, it will not be thrown to the ground - it will be destroyed and will disappear forever. You can remove fictional items once they have fulfilled their role - for example, you can remove the key that you have already opened all the doors in a given location, or the scissors when you have cut through all the chains. Then a small red "tick" will appear next to the item.

Storage boxes

You can store additional items in these boxes.

At almost every writing point (typewriter) you will find large black boxes. They are used to store redundant items without the risk of losing them. It's a good idea to store items that you'll use later, herbs and ashes that you don't want to process right away, or weapons for which you don't have ammunition at the moment.

Increase equipment capacity

Hips bag. - Inventory management in Resident Evil 2 - Survival guide - Resident Evil 2 Guide
Hips bag.

You can increase the capacity of your inventory several times by finding special Hip bags. After they have been collected, you will receive two additional fields to use in your inventory. It's a good idea to collect them regularly: this way you can carry more weapons and ammunition as well as medicines and aids - otherwise you'll have to make strong compromises. The location of all Hip bags that you can find in the game is described in the chapter Where to find all inventory improvements?
