There are over 250 galaxies to visit in No Man's Sky. On this page, you will learn how the galaxy map works, how to move around the galaxy, how to travel to another galaxy and how to get to the galaxy's core. We discuss black holes and the types of galaxies.
General information
The game starts in a galaxy named Euclid. As you complete the game's main quests, you'll be able to leave this galaxy to travel between the far reaches of the universe of No Man's Sky.
Each galaxy consists of a galaxy core and planetary systems. A galaxy can contain as many as over 500 systems.
Galaxies are divided into several types:
- empty - these are extinct galaxies;
- harsh - conditions in such galaxies are very difficult;
- lash - the systems in these galaxies are highly developed, and their planets contain a huge amount of elements, materials and living beings;
- norm - these are the most common galaxies. The systems in such galaxies vary.
Galaxy map
When you are in outer space, you can access to the galaxy map. The name of the galaxy and your distance from its core (measured in light-years) are displayed in the upper left corner of the screen.
The left and right arrows are for calculating the route. You can choose:
- galaxy core,
- free exploration,
- the landmark you have designated,
- black hole
- Atlas stations,
- or an active mission.
Thanks to the galaxy map, you will be able to move to nearby planetary systems, provided your ship is equipped with the appropriate technology and fuel. The distance you need to travel is under the name of the system and the region.

Black holes
Black holes will be able to move you over distances measuring even tens of thousands of light-years in just a few seconds. Using black holes will bring you closer to the center of the galaxy, but such travel also has negative consequences.
Another way to get closer to the center of the galaxy is to jump between planetary systems using the hyperdrive. However, this is a very slow process.
Flying through black holes can destroy tech modules in your ship's inventory, however, modules in tech inventory will be safe.
Black hole is a spatial anomaly and it can be found for you by Polo (you can find this character at the Anomaly station). When Polo tells you the location of a black hole, it will appear on the galaxy map and you will be able to choose a route to it.
After traveling through a black hole, the screen will show how many light-years you have traveled. Keep in mind that moving quickly through black holes several times in a row will not bring you closer to the center of the galaxy in a straight line. So if you enjoy traveling like this, don't expect to be able to find your previous location.
Galaxy core - how to get?
After entering the galaxy map, select a route to its core. The fastest path through the planetary systems will appear on the screen.
- The red straight line means you have enough fuel to use the hyperdrive and jump to that system.
- The red dashed line indicates that the system is out of range or you need a different drive to get there.
When you get near the center of the galaxy, you will be able to jump to its core. To do this, you must have a fully charged hyperdrive. When you complete your journey, you will automatically reach a planet from another galaxy.
After an intergalactic journey, all your modules in the general inventory of the spacesuit and the ship will be destroyed. Modules in technology and cargo inventory will remain intact.
