What are companions for?
Companions in Mount and Blade 2 Bannerlord have several functions. Like your character, they possess skills that can prove extremely useful on (and off) the battlefield. A companion with highly developed combat skills will help you kill enemies, and a companion with advanced Medicine skills will heal your soldiers.
Companions can also help with quests by performing them for you. Most quests give you a choice - you can complete missions yourself or send your companion along with a few soldiers.
Where to find companions?
The rule is simple - potential companions stay in taverns. All you have to do is visit any town and check the tavern - if a potential companion is there, you will see its icon, just like in the picture above. After talking to that companion, you will know their price of joining the party - if you agree to it, that person will join you.
The Mount and Blade 2 Bannerlord encyclopedia can help you find potential companions. To see it, press the N key during the game. Now select the Heroes tab. When you click on a given companion, you will see its last known location.
Which companions are the best?
It isn't obvious which companions in Mount and Blade 2 Bannerlord are the best. Each of them focuses on different skills and works best in different role - choose companions who match your needs. If you need a doctor - choose a companion with high Medicine skill. You need a companion who knows what to do on the battlefield - choose a character with combat skills.
Nicknames are helpful in choosing a companion. For example - if a character has the nickname "The Healer", it means that they specialize in healing. A character nicknamed "The Shieldmaiden" will do great during battles.
How to change companions' gear?
You can assign them better weapons - just like to your character. Just open the equipment menu and then use the arrows at the top of the screen - this way you can switch between your companions and change their weapons.
You can choose perks for your companions. The rule is the same as for weapons, but this time you have to open the character menu.
