1. You play as a monster hunter, who joins an expedition that is supposed to explore a new continent. At the beginning of the adventure, you can create your own avatar and the Palico - your cat friend.
2. After a few brief tutorials, you will get to Astera. It's the game's main hub, in which you can modify your equipment and craft new weapons at the blacksmith, start new contracts and interact with other players.
3. There are no such things here as character statistics or spells. Your avatar is fighting with one of 14 types of weapons, and using additional gadgets such as bombs, slingshot, traps etc.
4. As concerns the game's progression system, everything comes down to your equipment. The weapons have substantial upgrade trees. You can, if you wish, infuse your swords with fire or lightning to deal additional damage to enemies.

The armors in the game look spectacular.

1. Armors are sort of the same story. You can make a special armor out of virtually every monster. Many armors look amazing and give a serious boost to your character's defense.
2. It goes like this: choose a mission/expedition and go for a hunt. If you win, you collect the materials from the dead beast and go back to the city. Then you go to the smithy and make upgrades; if you're satisfied, you can go start a new quest.
3. Before heading for a hunt, make sure you visit the canteen and eat something. Eating boosts the avatar and hence makes things easier.
4. In time, you will unlock new mechanics and options - the botanical garden, scouting missions for Palico, converting items etc. This diversifies the gameplay and let's you obtain precious items.
5. You can, at any moment, set out alone and explore parts of the island. This will allow you to gather materials and complete additional tasks, or just fight with monsters.
6. By completing the main thread, you will discover new parts of the island, which will be inhabited by more powerful beasts. In time, you will be able to solve the mystery of the island and hunt for legendary monsters, which are a serious threat.
