Shadow of War: Which skills are the best? Middle-earth: Shadow of War Guide

Last update: 20 December 2022

When playing Middle-earth: Shadow of War you can gather a lot of additional skill points that will allow you to unlock all skills in the game. However, there is a catch - one skill can have only one activated upgrade and, sometimes, a choice isn't that obvious. On this page of our guide, you can find a list of the best abilities that, in my opinion, are the most useful:

The game features a lot of unique abilities that can further be modified with upgrades.
  1. Execution + Fatal Might - a very useful ability that allows you to gather much more Might points during fights which means that you can use, e.g. more executions.
  2. Perfect Counter + Mighty Reversal - like above, you get more Might which can be used in various ways.
  3. Brutal Aggression + Ceaseless Might - a double Might bar and reduced requirements for finishers. This ability is very useful, especially in the later parts of the game.
  4. Retaliation + Adamant - you can get additional Last Chance which is always useful. Especially in the fourth act of the game where sieges and defending fortresses becomes really difficult.
  5. Bird of Prey + Talon Strike - a great way to start a fight. Going up allows you to easily aim and stun enemies. You can also, e.g. perform a Ground Execution on a stunned captain which will certainly take a lot of his health.
  6. Shadow Strike + Shadow Dominate - an absolute must-have and one of the best skills in the game. You can get closer to your enemies and dominate them. This also works on captains! There were many moments in the fourth act where this ability saved my life. When you notice that a captain can be branded, you can aim with your ranged weapon and dominate him instantly. This will make domination process much easier.
  7. Ice Storm + Frostbite - another key ability, especially in 1-on-1 fights with captains or other stronger orcs. You can freeze your enemies and deal a lot of critical hits.
  8. Treasure Hunter + Mind Breaker - This ability increases domination speed which is always useful in the game. You will appreciate this ability in the fourth act.
  9. Call Mount + Dragon Song - to me, Drakes are the best beasts out of all that are available in the game, especially when you upgrade them with Scales of Iron. You can fly on them and they also fight by your side for a very long time.
  10. Shadow Strider + Hammer of Eregion - this is, in my opinion, the best ability in the game. It helped me in defeating more challenging enemies. Jumping behind enemy's back freezes him and when we combine this with Frostbite, we will be able to perform a deadly combo. Some enemies can be kept in a stun status permanently by freezing them all the time and attacking them with strong hits. A must-have.
  11. Call Followers + Bodyguard - other upgrades don't even come close to a strong Bodyguard who can, e.g. accompany you in a fight with an Overlord. Always try to recruit, e.g. a legendary Berserker who can singlehandedly give you victory in difficult fights.
