Mission objectives in Metal Gear Solid V are divided into three main categories. Despite appearances, at first it is hard to distinguish them. Those categories are:
- Mandatory mission objectives - They are visible since the beginning of the mission or become visible after completing other mandatory activities (for example, determining the whereabouts of a person you're looking for). Interestingly, some mandatory objectives might be exclusive of each other. For example, you might be forced to choose between murdering someone or stunning and transporting him to the Mother Base.
- Optional mission objectives - as the name suggests, completing them is not mandatory. If it isn't too much trouble, you should complete them, as it will improve your score at the end of the mission.
- Hidden mission objectives - it's a unique type of optional mission objectives. During the first playthrough of a mission, they don't appear on the objectives list. Only after completing the mission you will be informed what you should have done to unlock them. Hidden objectives are various - you can be tasked with finding an item schematic or leaving the map without being detected by enemy forces. In the walkthrough chapter of this guide you will find a full mission list, so you can check the objectives before starting playing and you can try to complete at least some of them at your first attempt at a mission.
Important! In many cases completing all mission objectives during the first playthrough is impossible or very hard. For example, you might not have specific equipment or various objectives exclude each other. Remember about not completed objectives when repeating a mission (more about it on the next page of the guide).
