The appearance of Kao's lives
You can see the number of Kao's lives in the pause menu. This information is not available on the screen during the game. The lives look like round icons with Kao's head on them. After losing all hearts, you lose one of your lives.

Store
You can buy life for 500 coins in the shop. It is not permanent and does not increase the total number of lives at the start of a map. A purchased life only works until you lose it.
Collectibles on the maps
You can also find lives while exploring the story maps. Most often they're hidden high above the platforms. Reaching them only makes sense if you already have enough hearts, so that you don't lose a life while going for another.
