Weapon techniques are a new mechanic introduced in Horizon Forbidden West. They are special attacks you can use to deal more damage to your target, attack several enemies at once or inflict status conditions onto them. Some weapon techniques work great against specific enemies while others are more universal.
Weapon techniques - how to unlock?
Horizon Forbidden West lets you unlock three techniques for each weapon type - you can find them all in the corresponding skill trees. To unlock a weapon technique you must first unlock a skill adjacent to it.
Weapon techniques - how to use?
To use weapon techniques in Horizon Forbidden West you must aim with L2 and then press R1. Aloy will execute the selected technique which will cost you some of your Weapon Stamina.
If you've unlocked several techniques for a specific weapon type you can switch between them by pressing right or left on the D-Pad while viewing the weapon select wheel (L1).
